Thanks everyone.
This has really been a great car. On top of it all, the engine has never been opened and dynoed with more HP 3 years ago than it did new (thanks to the SSI's and Dansk).
I was looking at my maintenance records back to 1984. I've only spent about $6k on this car in unplanned maintenance in 25 years. This was for things like crankshaft seal, tranny rebuild, starter, alternator, etc. That only averages out to about $250 a year in unplanned maintenance costs. The planned maintenance is much more but it has been money for tires, SSI exchangers etc.; stuff you either have to buy or have the option not to do. Didn't have to change the torsion bars or add the SSI's. One thing that stands out is when you own a car this long, you can almost track your life through the maintenance records. The year after I bought this car as a single guy I drove about 26k miles in a year. Then the year after I got married it was down to 16k miles; after the first child 6k miles, then down to 3k after my second child. Now I'm around 1k miles a year or less as more time goes to the family. Funny how that works. KurtV, I think it has been about 6 or more years since we met at the maintenance get together in OP. I wonder did that guy ever get his car running. |
Even if you don't drive it a lot, you know it's still there when you want to. I love to hear stories like yours and I also think some cars should be kept for a long time. Congrats!

Congrads, I'm right behind you.
I bought my 1984 Targa in 1988, but you have enjoyed yours more. Have about 46k on the clock, parked it for 11 years and only in the last couple of years I've brought it out, done a lot of work and use it mostly for DEs. Still very fun to drive. Phil |
