Hi guys.
I am almost finished with my TIG welding class. I have been working on aluminum the last couple of months and want to go ahead and buy my aluminum sheet to make my custom removable roof or hardtop for my speedster. I have been practicing on .063 sheet and it is going great. This summer I need to build my buck before I start the panel forming. My question is: What gauge aluminum would be best to use for this hardtop? I know some were made years ago for 50's speedsters but not sure how thick they were. Thanks in advance.

if u go thinner than .063, then you run the risk of it being too thin and easy to damage. We just had some aluminum door skins made in .063 and happy that we did so. Plenty of material to dress and clean up so the parts end up smooth with less imperfections.

Thanks Dave.
I was thinking .063 was around the right size. I think it will be pretty strong and light. I am going to make other parts in aluminum that I need also. Just finding the time to do it right now.

Definitely post pics of your progress. As a sometime panel beater myself, I don't see how you can do this without an English wheel. In fact, if I picture the roof correctly, you will do most of the work on the English wheel. There are a ton of videos on YouTube of guys making parts like this.

I wouldn't know any other way without using one. I will take some pics as I make the buck and as the progress happens. For me it is a slow process because of time.
