Hi all, would like a little help. Hope this doesnt come across as too obtuse, however, the small lever that is next to the shifter on the floor in the car...what is that? and what is it for? Thanks!!

The one to the left of the hand brake is the hand throttle. It pulls on the throttle pedal cable so that you can "choke" the car for start-up, especially in cold weather.
The one on the right of the hand brake is the heater control lever.

Here's a pic I just found of the heater and hand throttle levers, both labeled. From your description, I don't think you're talking about either of these. Maybe post a pic so we can see exactly what you're talking about, if it's not this:

G2B humble as well, eh? Do you have a very early 911, 912? If so, the lever is heat, kind of forward left of the shift lever. later cars had it right of hand brake. Hope this helps.
Have a great day.
