pardon the silly question...but...
My car comes from Switzerland and has a Swiss "CH" sticker that is absolutely baked on to the back bumper. I suspect it has been there for 20 years or so.
I have tried everything to get this off without damaging the paint, but am at a loss. Any bright ideas? ![]()

+1...also, it may help to warm it up a little before trying to remove it. Use a heat gun (gently) or hair dryer.

Hair dryer should help. Or CAREFULLY use a heat gun on the low setting. Or rags soaked in boiling water .

If it has been there 20 years I would imagine it is brittle, as well as the adhesive behind it.
The heat gun sounds good to maybe soften it up a little. I would also try a razor blade and some time and just gently slide behind it. Any damage, if any, to the paint on the bumper could most likely be rubbed out. A combination of the heat gun and razor blade actually sounds like it would work. Kind of like getting a registration tag off of a license plate. The goof off or solvent idea probably wont work. Those products are designed to loosen glue but in your case the glue is behind the sticker. The goof off would have to soak through the sticker in order to get to the glue and that is not going to happen. If you perforate the sticker then the goof off would have a better chance but I would try the heat and blade method first. I think it will work. Good luck. |

Heat gun might work, but you gotta think... A sticker on the back bumper next to the muffler is probably used to a lot of heat over the years. Worse case I think soaking it, literally by maybe soaking a sponge with a diluted solution of simple green or a mild adhesive remover (there might be better ideas better than a sponge or solution) and letting it sit (tied on or propped up etc.) might help the razor situation.

I agree. To use goof off or some other spirit you would have to soak it for a while. That would mean removing the bumper which is a pain. Heat, patience and gentle mechanical means to start followed by some solvent once it comes up sounds best. Besides waiting the swiss, why do you want to remove it? If it's been there that long then the paint will be faded around it and you will possibly have an outline of the sticker remaining.

I would do the following:
Use a heat gun or hair dryer and a plastic scraper or your finger nails to slowly scrape the sticker off. This is going to be time consuming but keep heating and scraping until the sticker is gone. Now you will be left with the glue. There are some citrus products for sticker removal that I would use next. Spray some on and let it sit, then wipe. Repeat until glue is gone, it will take a while. I would not use goof-off. it will work, but its going to take some of your paint with it. - Jesse |

You may also try a steamer, it works well to remove window tint and decals.
Good luck, Jinkatin 86 911 Carrera |
