That looks like pretty typical 912 wiring with the exception of the relay you mention...looks like one wire is coming straight of the gen. Could be a starter relay to help with hot starts...Good luck! Have you posted in the 912 forum? also try the 912 registry...thoise guys are pretty active!

I agree it looks like a relay most likley for starter.
The 912 Registery is great and for specific questions the better route is the 912 boards, I have the link posted below, What year??
You can get all the information you could need there.
Blatent plug, I have a complete 68 that I bought for the very fresh 616 motor & 5 speed for spares that I am going to start parting out, nice interior straight panels, rotten floor & suspension mounting.

Hope to see you on the boards

I seriously doubt that the relay has anything to do with the starter circuit, and the wire that goes to the generator probably hooks to ground (picture isn't clear enough) at the gen's end in order to complete a circuit.

The distributor still has a condenser so I doubt if it has electronic ignition. No way to tell what it does with the info provided...

Garage
It's hard to tell from that picture.

I'll tell you one thing...there's awful lot of exposed terminals on there. If you know this person, tell him to get some heat shrink on those.
