911 Engine Serial Number Decoding
I got my hands on a 1972 911E and I want to check and see if the engine is possibly original. The Serial number is 6220829. I have the number chart for the VIN, and it is definately a '72 E, I just want to see if the engine is too. Thanks!

According to page 201 of my engine book, this engine is a 1972 911E-E with MFI. Looks correct to me!

Wayne,
Thanks for your help. I purchased both of your 911 books, but they are unfortunately still en route. |
Need Help Engine number
It's been a while since i have been on the site. Anyways, can someone tell me what this engine number represents and if it is worth $1,500 ??
6196894 Engine has around 80,000 miles no FI or carbs, starter, flywheel Any help I would appreciate |
Drumboxer,
Congratulations on finding a ‘72E. SmileWavy What condition? Does it still have the MFI? Pictures please. You are now the caretaker of a very special Porsche. To expand on Wayne’s (correct) 12:02 AM PDT answer: 6220829 decodes: 6 = Engine designation, 6-cylinder unit. 2 = Engine type 911E – E. 2 = Model year 1972. 0829 = Sequential Number. The engine is type 911/52 and was equipped with a manual transmission. Porsche built 1,765 of these engines. The VIN on this ’72 911E should be of the form: 91122Xxxxx 911 = Vehicle model, 911 group. 2 = Model year 1972. 2 = Engine type 911E – E. X = Body version; 0 = coupe, 1 = Targa. xxxx = Sequential Number. The transmission would usually be type 915/02 5-speed although it could be a 4-speed, Sportomatic or other. Transmission numbers for the type 915/02 are of the form: 7320001 through 7329999 and 7720001 through 7720658. 7X2xxxx decodes as: 7 = Transmission designation for 6-cylinder engine. X = 3 or 7 = Transmission type 915/02 (and others). 2 = Model year 1972. xxxx = Sequential Number. This general scheme of decoding continues (similarly) through 1980 (when Porsche discovered identical numbers for some 1970 models ). The system for your 1985 Carrera started in 1981 with the 17-digit ‘world system’ common to all cars. Best, Grady tseybold, 6196894 is a 1969 911T type 901/03 for RoW version or type 901/16 for the USA version (901/13 or 901/19 respectively for the Sportomatic version). The 6,894th one produced (very late). G. |

Hi All.
I have found an engine block sitting in a scrap heap...sadly. Given its location under a mound of stuff, I was only able to pull the block number. Could anyone please help in decoding what this block was for? 901 105 111 OR Thank you! I have paid for it and waiting for the scrap dealer to clear it out but still trying to work out what it is. I wasn't able to figure it out from previous posts in this thread. |

I bought a 2.7 engine - Question on the SN
I bought a 2.7 motor that as I understand it came from a 1974. The serial number I was given is 6141933, but I can't seem to find this number in the 614**** ranges. The motor is already packed and ready for shipping. Can anyone here help me determine if this is a correct number. This is the case number from on the order from Ollies Engineering who did the machining work.

The number is on the case section right that supports the fan housing as shown above at 5:00 roughly. Your number is a base model non S 74 2.7 . Funny they bothered w a non S in 74, that's 10 hp less or So than an S.
