Brakes sticking grabbing - have searched please help
Hi guys i have searched the forum to check out what might be causing my brakes to stick on in my 1977 911.
the car sat for a long while, and intermittently has teh problem of the brakes sticking on after using them whilst driving. I understand it could be a range of things, but starting with the flexi hoses would be a good idea yes? I should add that even when it does occur, it always (so far) eventually goes away again. When i dont drive the car for a while they are freed up. does this sound like swollen brake lines or is it more likely calipers? All advice appreciated. Chris in Aus |

By the symptoms, I'd guess the rubber flex lines are swollen internally. They are usually good for up to 15 years, but sometimes less.
I'd be inclined to freshen up the calipers at the same time.

On my 88 my gas mileage increased when I put new hoses on it. The brakes made a groaning noise when I would pull away from a stop.
While you have it apart you may as well throw a caliper kit at it. There may be crap in there also.

thanks guys, yeah i figured it was the hoses, is it simply a case of pulling them out and putting in new ones, then bleeding the brakes?.
Any other steps involved, like do i need to empy the master cylinder resevior or anything like that? Chris |

thats it. if ur brake fluid hasnt been changed in a while it wouldnt be a bad idea to get a turkey baster or something and suck it outa there. carefull when bleeding the brakes if u use the master cylinder pump away method, u can ruin it by pushing the pedal to the floor, unless its really new. if its old the piston screws up the seals in the back of MC.

interesting, my rear brakes are sticking a little (noticed it when l tryed to push my car-very hard) but l changed out the old lines with new SS lines from our host and New fluid about 14 months ago.
Lthink it's the callipers that are sticking not the hoses. anyone have trouble with the callipers sticking due to the seals?

Had a similar issue with mine. The claipers were sticking, (stuck) and the brakes were not working well. Rebuilt calipers and now I have put you thru the windshield stopping power.

If you have no idea of what was done to your brakes, it is a good time to rebuild all the calipers and replace the brake lines. The rebuild kits aren't that expensive. Rebuilding calipers isn't that hard, but it is dirty. Some places will rebuild them for you.

The original post said that the sticking went away with time, this indicates swollen lines.
Always sticking brakes would indicate calipers are the problem. In any case, neglected braking systems require a lot of attention to return to service.
