steel airbox - what is the story?

my buddy has a steel airbox for a mid-year CIS setup. i did some poking around here trying to figure out what he has. were all of the steel airboxes made by Webb Designs? were there others? did the factory ever make one?

thanks!

I think webb design were the only ones making them, no factory ones, you can find them on ebay every once and a while. A well made part.

There are some cast aluminum ones out there. I don'y know how many. They were made by a guy in So. Cal for a few years. I have had one on my 78 for years since I had a run in with a back fire. I only paid about $300.00 for mine in 83 or so.

The story is, if buying a used 911 is like getting a massage, then your buddy got the happy ending.

do the cast aluminum ones have any manufacturer info or serial numbers or anything on them? i mean, i can tell if an airbox is steel or aluminum pretty easily, just wondering if there is any official ID on the aluminum ones tho.

The one pictured above has no visible markings and the one on my car has no visible markings. The one on my car was made by my old mechanics father. He was a machinist and tool and die maker and made the tools to die cast the parts. Those tools were available to me about 20 years ago and I passed on them not knowing how valueable they would become. The mechinic and his father are both dead now and the tools are probably rusting somewhere in a field. Those tools today would be very expensive to reproduce.

wow! that's really cool. what a story - handmade aluminum airboxes, with the tooling lost to history. i will check and see if my friend's is steel or aluminum (i'm almost 100% sure it's steel) just in case we've ended up with one your mechanic's pop's heirlooms.

who knew there would be such an interesting bit of trivia to come out of my question? thanks for sharing that with us!
