Before And After 911sc 3.0 to 3.2ss
Purchased the car late in 2008. Winter Project: I worked on the interior by replacing the worn seats, the steering wheel and did some minor interior touch ups and fixes. In January I decided to go thru the engine and clean it up. New filters oil seals ect. That is when I found the broken Head Stud. So Mid Febuary the car was of to The Auto Clinic in Neenah Wisconsin. It was found to have a cylinder that was borderline. The original plan was to puts some higher compression pistons and replace all the studs and put it back together. Instead of redoing the cylinders I decided to go with the 3.2 ss conversion.
3.2 Short Stroke Included: 964 cam grind 9.5:1 JE pistons and cylinders 3.2 heads rockers resurfaced new exhaust valves and guides Almost every piece of plastic and hose was also replaced along with just about everything else. I picked it up May 29th. Changed the oil at 100 miles and am in the middle of the next 300 mile run and it is back to the shop for a valve job, oil change and fine tune. The car pulls very strong and it was a great decision. The only thing that bothers me is not being able to pull past 5000rpm. I know there is all kind of power left:) Here are the pics: Before http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006061.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006086.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006024.jpg After: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006123.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006139.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006157.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006176.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006187.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241006203.jpg |
Well done, congratulations!
Any dyno sheets? |
Car looks great, especially the wheel change.
|
Congrats on the upgrade!
Once you've broken the engine in, you know you'll have to visit a dyno. |
Dino
No dino yet. I did find out there is a Dino close to me and will likely take it there this summer and post the results for all to see. I too am curious what kind of HP i ended up with.

So what's the approximate damage to the pocket book for this upgrade?
I'm planning on tearing my engine apart this winter to replace the head studs and all the typical "while you're in there" stuff. I'm curious to know what this upgrade would add to the tab. |
The 3.2ss is a great, quick revving little motor. If you are happy now, wait till it is broken in. They get stronger as you put the miles on.
What cr did you run? Are the cams still stock or did you change them as well? Have fun Duane |
upgrade
Pistons/Rings $975
3.2 head plus core charge $1500 rockers redone $75 964 cam grind $300 Heads/valve job/ grind flywheel $680 Plus labor and whatever else you have done. If a shop does it, I would say a min of $8500. I would budget $10k to $12k Because of: Clutch brakes alternator replace all plastics and hoses tensioners and anything else that may need to be done. I wanted to not have to deal with my motor for a while so I most likely did more than I needed to but with some luck I should be done for a while. |

That's not too bad really ($$$). Do you have to twin plug it if you go 3.2SS? My ROW SC is already at 9.8:1 and is borderline on 93 octane fuel. Luckly I have already done ALL of the extras you mentions this past winter, plus I added SSIs with M&K so I don't have too much to do other than address the engine internals. Dam*, this is a slippery slope! I try not to look at my running total too often. What is it they say? Every 911 is a $20k car? I got that beat already!!! |

My SS 3.2 feels like about 40 more horses. I have the bottom from an '82 and changed the CIS to a '78 plus I had my distributor recurved to run without vacuum. Going by the picture, the distributor looks like a '78-'79? Is it recurved to match your set-up? Like CR, octane and air temps? What year is the engine-bottom? What year is the CIS? Very nice 911. :) I agree that $10k is a realistic estimate to build a SS 3.2 |
no twin plug for me and stock CIS and no recurve done
bottom is 79 CIS is 79 Speedracer I believe you will have to do some head porting to open up yours to run the 3.2 setup. Have to confirm with an expert on that one. |
Excellent job! Really nice looking, that car is worth the effort and $$.
|
Yeap: looks good!!

That is a great looking car.
I've noticed that most people go with JE pistons when doing a 3.2ss. Is that the standard for the conversion? I am researching to do the same. |
J&E's
These are of the shelf items for J&E. Also I would be willing to bet the price point is another reason for their use.
|
'79/'79 Sounds good.
You list $975.- for JE pistons/rings. That price cannot include the cylinders. What type 98 mm cylinders? JE? Cost? What overlap did you time the 964-cams at? Thanks. |
98 mm J&E's
3.2 liter jugs rebuilt thus the core charge as I did not have 3.2's to trade back bought the package form EBS for $2500 plus shipping No clue on the overlap |
Sounds about right.
Whether MaxMoritz, or any Mahle/JE 98 mm set-up, the final cost of these over-sized P/C's is between $3-4000. Sounds like they bored out 95 mm Carrera cylinders to 98 mm and then matched pistons. Any idea what plating was used in the cylinders? |
I looked into tis to give my 3.0 1979 more spunk. I was quoted $10,000 Part of that was 40 hours labor. But was told that a Cam and injections system would be a must!
My 911 is stock at 188 HP I think. I put on the 74 OEM muffler and heat exchanger/headers and dropped out the air pump. So I think I bumped the HP up a touch there, Maybe 12 HP I am told. To spend 10K to gain 20 horses, yikes!! Think I'll just keep lightening it as I can, already replaced front and back bumps with fglass. and took of the carrera tail for a fglass 3.8 wing. alltogether must have dropped at LEAST a hundred pounds |
The '79 is listed as 180 HP
To start off, a conversion to SS 3.2 makes only sense if you're facing a major rebuild anyway or if you want to build one for the heck of it. The biggest cost-factor is 98 mm P/C's. Other than using SSI's and a flow-thru muffler, you cannot do more to incresae HP in your '79. A '78-'79 has only 8.5 : 1 CR which is a disadvantage. The '78-'79 CIS is great if combined with a bottom from an '80-'83 which has 9.3 CR. (Porting is rquired to fit the larger intake runners) Or, find higher CR 95 mm P/C's for your '79 and keep the '79 CIS. CIS works fine with 964-cams but carbs plus a hotter cam would give you even more power. I can tell you that 40 extra horses is very noticeable and a lot of fun. :) |
