What car can I grab a horn from?

I want to just get used horn off ebay or a junkyard for my Porsche. The original 66 horn is just really whimpy and/or one of them is not firing well. I love the Cadillac train horns but I think it would knock my fender off and drain my battery each time I used it. I don't even use it much but its a good thing to have nonetheless.

Your locationis not listed but you canuse a generic horn(s) from any auto parts store.

I installed a set of "snail" horns and they worked great. Much louder than the broken originals.

But it didn't sound like a Porsche so I bought a used set right here from a Pelican and now it sounds like it should.

Sure, an 18 wheeler driver couldn't hear it if you pointed right at the cab but it sounds good.

If you want real sound, find an old 6 volt horn. Early 50's Chevy works well.

I bought a compact air horn for around $40 when I had a Miata. I sold the Miata and swapped the horn to the 911. It'll wake anyone up around you who isn't paying attention.

I think you can find the same horn under a different name and cheaper at any auto parts store.

I bought a pair of red, very loud horns from Griots Garage. They sound great and look good too.

I took the stock horns from the Nissan 350z a while back. Rsult => blown horn relay. I believe our horns are ground system and other horns are different. When I mount the horn to the chassis, it's grounded and it's short. No problem, I just made a plastic bracket instead of metal braket. It works but you have to be careful when working near it, not to let it touch the metal chassis.

Great point. A wiring schematic is helpful.

I did the same but I was able to use the parts store horns without problem after.

Hey Early,

My 84 was burning up my horn relay as fast as I could replace it. Seems that one of the trumpet horns had some kind of short and was causing the problem. Instead of risking replacing the wrong horn, I went to a local u-pull it and found a 1990's 7 series BMW and ripped the horns off of it. Sounds stately, fixed my problem, was cheap, and they came off of a German car so I maintained a little originality. I was amazed at how massive the old horn bracket was. It must have been 1/8 inch steel to hold up 2 lbs. of horns.

My sole remaining trumpet horn died (never sounded very good on its own anyway) and I fitted a pair of 996 horns. Made up a 2" adapter harness and bolted them on. Our host carries them very reasonably priced @ $14.50 each - but you do need the weatherproof electrical connector kit.

Must have saved at least 5-6 #'s in weight. They still use the same harmonic frequencies selected by the factory for the originals, so sound melodious yet penetrating.

question to you guys. The after market horns is measured to have the ground terminal connected with the horn body. How about the stock horn, does the ground terminal always in contact with the horn's body?
Thanks.
