horn problem with '99 996

My '99 996 has serious horn defibrillation. Started mildly, and has gotten worse, to the point where the slightest bump, deceleration, or cornering sets it off. Currently I have the horn fuse pulled, in order to be able to drive the car. After researching this forum, I have a basic sense that the problem is probably in the horn switch or in the horn relay. Couple questions for you horn experts, or '99 996 experts:

- where is the horn relay on my car?
- how involved is accessing / repairing / replacing the horn switch in the steering wheel assembly?
- I have searched the internet for a service manual for this '99 996, and haven't found anything. Any recommendations?

Kelly,

Its not any of that.
Behind your horn pad there are 3 or 4 rubber bushings that keep the horn contact
away from the horn pad. These are for when you press the horn, the pad returns
to the original position.

These are now worn. So when you brake hard or go over big bumps, the horn
go's off by itself.
You can either try to replace these bushings or put something inbetween to
separate the horn pad from the contact.

I simply used a business card folded over and inserted it between the horn pad
and steering wheel. Has been working for the past 2 years that way.

Thanks Steve. My Bruce Whittier "996 Maintenance and OBD II Manual" doesn't arrive until sometime next week. In the meantime, pardon my ignorant questions: 1) do I need to remove the horn pad to shim it? 2) If so, how? 3) do you have a service manual you like for the 996?

Gracias!
Kelly
