New RS project....new to 911 forum
Greetings,
I've owned several front engine water coolers (save for a Cayenne) and I've always wanted to replicate a '73 2.7 RS. Anyhow I've recently acquired a '80 SC driver that's in great shape that I'll be cloning. I want to do this correctly but I can't seem to find a site that lists what the major and subtle differences are. Where do I begin? How about sourcing parts? People here have done this before. Any pointers? I'm excited about this project. TIA |

Do a search for "ultimate backdate thread" It's the ultimate thread on backdating....hence the name. Good luck - a few dollars and lot of time and you will have a seriously cool car afterwards.

Differences ? You'll need (front to rear)
- An RS front bumper (usual suspects) - Chromed headlights - A set of early fenders or at least the front section of early fenders (cheaper) - turn signal and bottom of the wheel arch section to weld to your SC fenders (I recommend that, the SC ones are galvanized, have all sort of hooks under there to accomodate your SC stuff ) - A long hood, metal or Fiberglass or even carbon fiber: you can either use a real one and cut/weld the front piece of a real early car to match the hood latch, or get a "backdate hood" that lets you use the SC tub uncut - A set of chromed trim for the windows - Period mirror - Carrera Decals - An RS tail - A rear RS bumper, and bumper seals - If you wanna be correct, 15" fuchs That's just outside... inside, well.... that's even more $$$ for seats, wheel, instruments redone with the little center deco in the middle, a whole new-old dash to remove the wrong SC air vents among other things, dash trim, door panels, door panel tops (to remove the SC electric mirror switch thing), light carpet, la-dee-daa..... If you want to do something real close, it's gonna cost you... Something 1/2 ass but good looking, probably $10000... Personally, having done a backdate (not even RS), I think you are better off selling your SC driver and buying someone else's replica for 50 cents on the dollar... Even 75 cents.. worth it ! Go here and get all quality parts from great people.. http://www.tremotorsports.com/page.cfm?Node=10276
Figure on $5-7K for everything (including interior and seats) for a DIY plus paint. I will be doing the same thing except in RSR in the near future. You will end up with a very light, fast, COOL car! I need to talk to TRE about fitment to a 964 as then I would have a 3.6, GOOD A/C, etc. from the get-go. Actual costs as of now - Front fenders - $900 per pair Hood using std. latch - $575 Front RS bumper - $450 Rear RS bumper - $425 Front turn assemblies - $330 per pair Signal lenses - $130 per pair Horn grilles - $50 per pair Rear bumper to body seals - $46 set of 3 Front bumper to body seal - $47 Reproduction 73 stainless driver mirror - $80 RS lightweight carpet set - domestic Grey or Black Perlon - $259 or German style Perlon - $279 73 RS door panel kits – $279 a pair. Seats - TRE's own RS/RSR seat line. Replicas of the original Recaro based RS and RSR seats in a variety of models. Uses Recaro seat adjuster/mounting brackets and your early headrests (available separately) Costs start at $600 per seat. Superlative quality and finish Front RS Style stainless hood tie downs with rubber toggles - $26 a pair Rear RS Style stainless lid tie downs with rubber toggles - $28 a pair A ducktail is additional, I intend on using "tail-less" lid that I have in stock for now.. always add the duck later.

Fantastic information! This will take me a while and I'll post pics when I start. One more question.....any ideas about differences in the rocker panels?

What about the engine and transmission? Are you building a real RS 2.7 or is this just a bodywork project?

So I've been working/living overseas for quite some time and am in need of an extended vacation. I expect to return "home" in the next month or so to get this project on the go. I've been getting parts shipped to my parent's house because I'll be working on the project with my father who's in his golden years. The SC wasn't quite the right color so I unloaded it and got this.....
![]() ![]() It arrived a couple of days ago. Purchased sight unseen but I had a PPI done. It revealed that it could use a clutch soon and some wheel bearings but everything else said the car is solid. Can't wait to see it in person (for now all I have is pictures sent from my folks ![]() Question: I'll be going 7 and 8" fuchs on this car. Can anybody tell what's currently on it from the pic? 6 and 7s?

6 in front but maybe 8 in the back ? I have 7s in front and 9s in the back the front fenders needed some work but the 9s fit fine without any mods.
Are you going fiber or steel ?

those are 6 & 7....no need to modify fenders for 7 & 8s if you are going with standard tire sizes....7 & 8 was a factory option
