1968 911 engine number query

my car, a 911L has a chassis # of 11810643 so definitely an L right?

the original engine number from porsche UK is 3080610

the engine in the car is 3180061 (901/07). according to the red book this is a sportomatic block. it's got weber carbs (and its definitely manual!)

is there anyway porsche get these things wrong, just strange to think that at some time the engine was replaced with an engine so close by date and so similar in the digits... any knowledge appreciated as usual,

ben

Those engine numbers are off by quite a lot, and a different series besides. So Porsche UK is quite likely correct in the original number. What is the type # and build # of the engine you have? These numbers are stamped just a little further back of the serial # on the case.
