Whale tail on a 964? What's it take?

Is it feasible/possible to install a late '70's tea tray whale tail and engine lid onto a 1993 964?

you can gut your lid and attach the tail ...
or you can install a pre mounted early lid/tail and modify the hinges ...

the hinges available pre mod'ed if you prefer to buy them done and just bolt them up

i think that explains a bit better than yep ...

If RS America can do a Carrera wing, you can do a whale tail.
It will be nice, I bet.

Thank you. Where do you get the modified hinges.

(BTW, I tried doing a search on this topic several times and came up with zip. That 'yep' comment is 'BS'.)

First of all a tea tray spoiler and a whale tail are two different wings.

Whale:

Tea tray

Second of all:

Actually that "yep" was about the most complete answer you could get for the question you asked.
The most complete being: Yep, it is feasible.

If you would have asked: Is it feasible and if it is, how does one do this?
Then, a mere "yep" would have not been enough.

So to answer your first question:

Yep!

Lets start this thread again....

Yes it feasible. In Porsche land anything is possible with deep enough pockets.

Basically you'd have to take out the rising spoiler and associated hardware and drill some mounting holes for the "Tea tray"...
Pretty straight forward mod. How handy are you? Would you be doing the work yourself or paying someone to do it? That makes a big difference...

This is an RS America... Note the earlier style spoiler. I've always liked this car.

This is a Ruf modified car... Turbo Spoiler!

Hmm. BS? Sorry if my first reply was a little short. You didn't ask how, you just asked "if."

Here's what I would do. Remove the existing engine lid and everything associated with it and hang it on the garage wall. Buy a complete Carrera 3.2 engine lid and factory spoiler and repaint it the color of your car. Install it, as directed above by others.

If you choose to use a "whale tail" be advised that there were several versions of this, not counting the differences between factory and aftermarket pieces. All of them, including the factory ones, MAY need some work to get them to properly fit your car. Even brand new factory parts can need work, as I have personally found over the years. In addition, you may not be happy with the paint finish on a fiberglass tail, especially after several years.

Lastly, be prepared to shim and adjust any replacement decklid that you install on the car. There are enough minor variations in the parts that this is usually required. When installing the lid, use tape around the edges of both the lid and the opening until you have verified that the installation is good enough that there will be no contact between the lid and the car when the lid is opened.

Better?

Sorry, JR. Tough morning. Thanks for the more complete reply and I appreciate it (I got bent cause I put 'What's it take?' in the posting title). I have a tea tray spoiler that someone from this forum wants to install on his 964 but he is evidently clueless mechanically. I have never owned a 964, so I didn't want to assume anything and have him pick the part up only to not be able to use it.

Maybe now when a search is done it will come up and save some time and energy. Again, Thank You!

In that case, you've done all you need to do, apart from advising him that he ought to have a body or mechanical shop install it for him.

John, it is a bolt on, he will need to disconnect the motor on his wing, and the wing light on the dash will remain, a piece of black tape fixes that...

Installing a pre-964 deck lid on a 964 is very easy, since the lid is the same shape. The only difference are the hinges. A 964 hinge is set wider than a pre-964. Since they are wider, all you have to do is fab up or buy an adapter plate to bring the offset in a couple of inches. I believe you can actually buy the adapter plate from Porsche, but I would just fab one up myself. The plate would be roughly a quarter inch thick (probably less), four inches long (or so) and three inches wide (guessing). Bolt the plate to the existing hinges and bolt the lid to the adapter. Very easy.

Here is a picture of my old 964 which was very dirty this day:

I believe the 964 turbo tea tray's were scaled down in dimension over its earlier 930 counterpart. Meaning; the rubber was smaller to conform to the more bulbous body panels.

Okay then, it's "some fiberglass type thing." It's an aftermarket part and doesn't actually duplicate anything the factory did, exactly. I suppose it is closest to a Carrera 3.2 tail, in general appearance, although the bottom is more like a turbo.
