Info needed on VIN
Hello everybody,
There's a strange thing when I look at the VIN stamped on the chassis of this car : It looks like one number is missing because the VIN range of the 68 produced cars had 9 numbers and not 8 as shown on the pictures... Any idea? |

I think that car has been discussed on here in the last month or so.
Correct numbers, but wrong year. That car is a '67, not a '68. ![]() 1967 VIN No Body Model Engine No Engine CC HP /RPM Production 11830001 - 11830473 Coupe 911US 901/14-17 1991 130 @ 6100 473

Woops.
11830025 is a 1968 model year VIN. 11 = Type 911 group. 8 = Model year designation 1968. 3 = Porsche (Reuter) chassis coupe, USA version. 0025 = Sequential number (leading number can be used for further sub-coding, 5 = Karmann chassis). The alu VIN plate on my '68 coupe is identical (except for VIN number ![]() Best, Grady

Quote:
That's a proper number for a '71 T...the coding sequence was changed in the '69 model year.

botic 911130188
I recommend someone inspect the VINs again. Starting with the 1970 model Porsche added a digit to the VIN for a total of 10 digits. The ’71 911 should have original VIN on the alu plate next to the hood latch, one stamped in the chassis between the gas tank and the gas heater-A/C well, the ‘Public VIN’ riveted inside the left windshield post (A-pillar), an original decal below the driver’s door latch striker plate and a hidden number. All these should agree and match your title and registration. 911 = Type 911 group. 1 = Model year 1971. * = Engine type: 1 = 911T, 2 = 911E, 3 = 911S. * = Body version: 0 = Porsche coupe, 1 = Targa, 2 = Karmann coupe. * 0188 = Sequential number? The number of digits in the VIN changed from six prior to the ’68 model year when it changed to eight. The ’67 911S added an “S” after the 6th digit. The 1969 model year has nine digits in the form: 119XYdddd where; 11 = Type 911 group (no ‘9’). 9 = Model year 1969. X = Engine type: 1 = 911T, 2 = 911E, 3 = 911S. Y = Body version: 0 = Porsche coupe, 1 = Targa, 2 = Karmann coupe. dddd = Sequential number. The 10-digit VIN format was very consistent from 1970 model through the 1980 models. There was an important change starting with 1980; the year became a letter with ‘A’ = 1980, ‘B’ = 1981, etc. Starting with the 1981 models, the VIN became the World Standard 17-digit version. This gives much more information and includes a ‘Check Digit’ based an algorithm using all the other alpha-numeric characters. The 'crooks' have even found a way around this. I can't stress enough the importance of inspection and knowing the provenance of any 911 you consider buying. If you ever intend to sell your 911 (or give it to a grandkid), having researched its 'title history' will increase its value and prevent problems. Best, Grady

911130188 is only 9 digits and should be 10, so depending on which one is missing the car could be anything (almost)
911 VINs 1965 through 1967 30xxxx series VINs 1967 targa 500xxx series VINs 1968 118xxxxx series VINs 1969 119xxxxxx series VINs 1970 through 1979 911xyyyyyy series VINs where x is the year digit 0 to 9 matching the year I believe Kurt V may be referring to info on one of two sites with demented VIN info, half of which is a year off.

My mistake...to me the 1 meant 911T...didn't notice only 9 digits...

Paul,
You and I can call that a “senior moment” and not be far from fact. ![]() ![]() It isn’t uncommon for some title clerk (particularly at a DMV) to incorrectly transcribe the VIN for a ’71 USA 911T Porsche coupe. There is one out there with VIN 9111111111. Yes, that is a ‘9’ followed by nine ones. ![]() If Porsche had not changed the date place for the 1980 model from ‘0’ to ‘A’, there would be a whole series of duplicate VINs in ’80 that were the same as ’70. Not so with engine numbers. There are two engine number 6300001 through 6302480. There are more. Of course it would be hard to miss the differences between a type 911/02 2.2S MFI and a type 930/09 3.0SC CIS ![]() Best, Grady
