Anything wrong with a smog pump car?

Is there anything inherently different about an engine with a smog pump? If you remove everything including the air injectors, is there any detrimental effect to the engine down the road?

When you go to rebuild or hotrod an engine, do the ports or any other associated parts cause other problems?

No problem without a smog pump UNLESS you need it for state emmissions testing.

Otherwise, the engine runs just fine without it. the pots in the heads need to be capped off if you remove the "spider legs" that make up the piping.
I removed mine and have had no problems at all.

The only thing a smog pump does is inject "clean" air into the exhaust to make a feeble attempt at reducing the bad stuff coming out of the tail pipe.

Wayne, What effect does removing the smog pump have on the EGR valve if it is not also removed? I too am considering removing the pump between smog checks, but I don't want to damage any of the other emission components so that they will remain operational when I reinstall the pump and go for the biannual inspection.

I'm a Texas resident currently doing time in CA so I could remove it and not smog the car.

For you non-CA guys:

No effect on the EGR after removing mine. Just remove the pump and all associated plumbing, plug with whatever methid you choose and roll on.

If you do not want to mess with the plumbing that goes to the heads just plug the hole that leads to them in the engine bay.
