Which steering wheel is period-correct for a '74?
The steering wheel on my 911 looks a bit out of place so I'm wondering if its correct or whether I need to replace it for authenticity's sake (as well as to maybe get one that's a little nicer/fresher/not so faded looking.
Car is technically a U.S. spec although if the Euro/ROW ones used a different wheel for '74, please let me know as this is the direction the car is going (I'm converting everything to Euro spec that isn't already). This is the wheel currently on the car - is this the correct one? ![]() Or maybe this? ![]() Or something else? Thanks in advance.

The second one would have been standard on a 911 or 911S. The first one would have been optional on either car and standard on a Carrera.

+1 on the second one...
I have seen one of those installed on a bone-stock '74 US 911S...

I'm fairly sure javadog is spot on, the first one is standard on the carrera, and the second one is standard on the 911, and 911s.

Just get a Prototipo and be done with it.

My 74 carrera had the first one on it when I bought it.
I upgraded to the 930S wheel which adds about 10 HP ![]() |

I did a Google search for prototipo (mostly for edification, I'll almost certainly not go aftermarket) and all that comes up is driving shoes. Should I be looking somewhere in particular?
FWIW I want to keep it stock in appearance so I think the upper wheel can stay (the car has been basically converted to a Carrera Targa only needing a few bits back-dated to be right). I know the engine and transmission are correct, as well as the flared fenders and now the steering wheel, so that's good. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I spend more time going through it. Thanks all! 930S wheel is nice too. Probably gonna' stick with the upper one though since it's correct for the Carrera Targa. Grazie!

Hello Jeff,
according to all literature I know, this one: ![]() is the standard wheel on a '74 911. The first one was the option "Sportlenkrad (Leder)" as it was standard for the Carrera.

Jeff,
Whether or not it is original, the three-spoke wheel on your car is much more desirabe than the standard four-spoke wheel. If you decide to sell or trade it, I would recommend looking up prices for similar wheels... you might be shocked at what they go for.

As long as you are happy with the size/appearance of your stock wheel, you have no good reason to change. In my case, I wanted a smaller diameter wheel and went with a Momo "Sport" (that is similar in appearance to their current "Monte Carlo"). Many like the classic look of the Prototipo and hence went that direction. As an extra benefit, the required adapter to mount hte whneel to my car moves the steering wheel out from the dash a few inches and I like my body/arm/leg driving position better as well. If you decide to consider a change, you can see the Momo Choices here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/MISC/POR_MISC_mowhel-detail.htm
