The easiest Alternator Warning Light question ever
This is embarassing, but it has been a very long time since the race car had a stock dash. I dont have the owner's manual and my official workshop manual doesnt actually have an illustration of this...
Which is the stock location for the alternator warning light? This one integrated into the instrument... ![]() Or this one... ![]() Also I found this bulb in the workbench...it looks special as it has a thick glass globe, has a 2-prong, spring loaded holder and one of the prongs is marked "+" ![]() ![]() Is that my original bulb? As an added bonus, any guesses why the 5w bulb I have wired in temporarily never lights up under any circumstances, but everything charges properly when its installed/the alternator stops charging when the bulb is disconnected? I understand why the bulb is necessary for the alternator to charge, but not why the bulb doesnt light when ignition is on but not running/charging. Ok I guess the last one is a more complex question... Thanks!

The stock location is in the gauge, it's the one marked with the battery. The original bulb is a 4w in an '82 (up from 2w). The bulb should light when the alternator isn't spinning with the ignition on. Check the blue wire circuit to find out why.

Thanks John! Maybe its not lighting because it is a higher wattage bulb, so it provides enough continuity for the alternator to know to charge but not enough to visibly light? There are a mess of connections and factory black-shrinkwrapped bits which I assume is at least 1 resistor and/or diode. I have the manuals and have seen the doagrams and threads here. I wish there was a definitive wiring diagram which actually shows what is required. All the factory, Bentley and posted diagrams make no mention of the diode or resistor, and neither have specifications on Pelican's catalog.
By the way, what is that light supposed to be in the second picture?

The hole is an oxygen sensor warning lamp probably, or EGR warning.
Perhaps somebody has inserted a resistor in parallel with the bulb so that current flows through the resistor to power the D+/61 circuit, and the resistance from the bulb is sufficiently high (either due to the filament or high-resistance connections on the socket -corrosion) that it doesn't glow brightly enough to see.
