advise on exhaust stud modification
making a new post on this as my last one was kinda vague , My 82 3.0 started making a popping noise on acceleration, and i knew i'd blown a head gasket,( I've heard this sound before) pulled motor and it was obvious that #3 was leaking compression between head and jug, so i ordered a top gasket kit, while apart, I'm adding 964 cams and my motorsport flywheel thats been sitting on my bench for a year and a complete reseal for some oil leakes. My prob is that i want to change out my long exhaust studs to the shorter ones for my thin flange ssi's,and they will NOT come out without snapping, my thought is to drill em all out and timecert from a 6mm to an 8mm and use allen bolts to hold on exchangers. anyone done this?

mark, ive read those before, I have no problems getting out broken studs, done thousands, (worked at a BMW dealer for 16 years) I want to know if i can go to a 8mm threaded timecert so i can put some torque on my headers without worring about twisting off the 6mm that are there now, I think i can, since ive allready started the procedure, only thing i know so far is that ill have to drill out the flanges on the manifold 2 more mm.

looking good, only six more to go. I'll be able to put some torque on these babys now, good bye exhaust leaks.

The studs are 8mm not 6mm. The German shop I used for 20 years would insert a 10mm threaded stock and then tap that for 8 mm

So much work...
I used the M8 ARP studs. They went in the stock holes and they will never break. I think they are rated at 170,000 psi tensile strength, "substantially stronger than grade 8" hardware. I gues you could use ARP M10 studs. Wow, talk about bulletproof. Mine are 57mm long for the thick flange, I'm not sure how long you would need for the thin flange. Mark Mark

I know nothing but why the timecerts instead of just drilling and tapping for the larger studs. Thanks.

after staring at it and discussing with my bro Jeff, we are not going to timecert, will be using 10mm allen headed bolts. there is just not enough room to put in a 10 mm timcert, plus, mounting bolts would be to big.

long 8mm timeserts and regular 8mm studs will work fine. looks stock and normal that way too. i kinda doubt that the 10mm allen head will pass through the holes in the exchangers, and may also be pretty tight against the actual exhaust pipes.

i actually have the 10mm allens, test fit and they will work great, will be able to put lots of torque to them, but now im worried about thermal expansion properties of the bolts
