Painted my Fuchs

well, I got the fronts done...got distracted by the 49ers game.

Just wanted to say a special thanks who (don't remember the post), chimed up and said to use electrical tape for masking the edge. That sure made masking the edge much easier, flexible, less frustrating, etc.

I am amazed how much better they look (used Rustoleum Satin Black)!

Again, much thanks to all who post solid technical information, it does help everyone else out.

-Jack

+1 on the pics.

How about a short write up and products used.

I know its a bit late but 3m makes a tape that is
perfect for this job. Its a blue plastic tape much
like electrical tape. Its a fine line tape then you
just mask up to its edge. GREAT stuff, I use it
when I paint race motorcycles and helmets.

Will post pics this evening when I go home...

Process I used

1. Cleaned the wheels really good with a 3m wheel cleaner product.
2. Hit up the paddles (black parts) with the scotchbrite pad
3. Use electrical tape for the edge of the black and silver
4. Then used copious amounts of 3m blue painters tape
5. Then used masking paper around the rest of the wheel
6. Several coats of RustOleum Satin Black in a Rattle can
7. Also lightly painted the lug nuts
8. Let dry for over 24 hours
9. Put them back on the car
10. Used the "ziploc" sandwich bag trick on the lug nuts so they did get too nicked up

That was it....and yes, it is pretty satisfying.

Thanks

Jack

From other posts and my own experience doing the same thing.... may I recommend Rust-o-leum 7777 rattle-can. Great stuff and durable. And cheap. Follow instructions on temp and recoat provisions. I think "Satin Black" was mentioned here as to what was used...and this is 7777

Wurth satin black, holds up nice, easy to apply,
Rustoleum is also good. The shop where I bought it only had Wurth, so I went with that.
