SSI's on a 3.6L???
I found someone who sells SSI's with "SPECIAL TAPERED INLET PORT FOR THE 3.6L HEAD" and "Flipped Flanges". They say these work great on a 3.6L motor with over 50 sets installed. They claim dyno tests show a loss of no more than 8HP on the top end of the curve. However they gain that back on the bottom and mid range segments of the curve.
I would like to know what some of the local experts think about this. Could this be true? I have not seen this setup on this forum. Comments please.

I always thought that the SSIs were too small in diameter for more than 3.4-ish and above. You may get better response over on the engine board, but I'd say they are too small. What is their diameter? 1 5/8"?
Might want to take a look at the dyno sheets... -Michael

I looked into this when I did my transplant, and the SSI's are too small. I see that you have done things right so far, (brakes, suspension), so don't stop with the exhaust. I have two exhuat setups for 3.6 transplant and love both of them. They both use the 993 heat exchangers. Right now I have one with a flowmaster muffler that I would be willing to part with. If interested give me a shout.

I've got an 88 here in the Bay Area that will need a rebuild in the next year. I assume you went with the 3.6 for the added power/lower cost than rebuilding your 3.2. I'd like to learn more about how to get this smog approved in CA (assuming it's not a track only car). PM if you wish. Thanks. Brad |

Mark, for your needs and a 3.6, I recommend fitting the stock 964 exhaust. There's a provision for a cat when you need to smog, and it's fairly quiet depending on the combination of final mufflers you choose. Plus you have heat. Most 964 owners bypass either the primary or secondary muffler, which in itself is not that loud, and some also bypass or place a premuffler in place of the cat. The net result is power that is not much different from 964s that change out to full headers and a sport muffler. In your case, you could keep the cat or put a premuffler in it's place, and keep the 964 primary muffler that comes right off the cat, and from there exit out to a tailpipe.
Alternative 2 is to fit the 993 exhaust on your car, but you'd have to relocate the oil tank to forward of the right front wheel with the tank from a 964, in order to have the room to install the side mufflers of the 993. That exhaust is quiet and pretty optimized. Removing the cat and mufflers makes the car open exhaust loud and doesn't gain more than 10 hp. I'm not 100% sure though the rear valances have enough room for the 993 side mufflers, so you should verify first.

Nice thing about the SSIs is the simplicity, low weight and myriad muffler options. If its only 8 hp..might be worth a try?
Although the 964 option above seems fine and the 993 HE (flipped flange) with the M&K muff seems like a great way to go too. Can you get heat with the 993 HES pretty easily?

ask to see all the dyno tests - you want to see a decent sample size on a an ENGINE dyno -- NOT a single run on a road dyno |

The ssi's are all 35 mm diameter.
That permits a bit more torque on 3.2 , but a restriction at hight RPM. I think that is not really the best way to upgrade the exhaust for a 3.6 engine , i would prefer RSR style headers , 40 mm diameter. Just my opinion.

for easy of installation ssi's are the way to go. I would suspect a bit more low end TQ but to lose on top. for a better all around way is the 993HE and a muffler. It is hard to beat either option though I suppose the 964 route would be an option

SSI's ?
I am not actually considering a set of SSI's for my 3.6L motor. I had a set on my modified 3.2L. I am convinced they are the reason for my low dyno numbers during my custom SW chip dyno session.
I though this was an interesting topic and was hoping to have some of the local Pelican experts chime in. Also, I though it would be nice to hear from some of those that have already installed a set on their 3.6L motors.
