Removal of stuck t-bar in A-arm?
Your best methods to remove a stuck torsion bar in the a-arm? Other one slipped right out... all rubber has been removed already so it is just the bar and the arm left. I have heated the front of the a-arm and banged and pulled to no end so far. Recommendations? A-Arm is from a '73.
Best regards, Michael

Slight taps forward can help.... there is room between the pressed-in cap and the fwd end of the t-bar. If that doesn't loosen it, you can drill a hole in the pressed-in cap and pry it out/off so you can get to the fwd end of the t-bar to soak it with WD-40/Liquid Wrench and try to tap it out from that end.
Hope that helps...

Michael,
The best method is to position it front down and soak it with PB Blaster overnight or more. Tapping with a hard hammer helps distribute the solvent. If that fails, you can drill a small hole in the front plug and use a puller to remove the plug. Once the plug is removed, you can use a press to push the bar out. The plug is easily repaired and staked back in place. Best, Grady

I drove mine further in until it popped the end cap off. After that it slipped right out. Then I tapped the cap back in with a soft hammer.

Well ok! I guess I need to hit the recycling bin for something to soak it in...

There is no need to use a puller on the plug. Just drive the t-bar in with a soft hammer and you'll be fine. All due respect to Grady but this is very simple.

I just finally got one out this afternoon. I spent 4 hours getting it out after it being in since 75.
Put in a vise plug end down and flood the tube with sea foam and pb blaster, heat it then let it soak overnite. I had to remove the plug eventually to soak it from that end also. What I found when I got it out was over time trash enters the tube and builds up behind the neck of the shaft. That has to be soften to push the shaft out, I was able to push the bar all the way out the plug end but still could not make it go the other way. Heat, rust solvent ,sea foam and an air chiesel were what I used. |

This method works great. I put a block of hardwood on the ground and hit it with the exposed end of the torsion bar, driving it and the plug through the a-arm.
