Trouble Replacing Steering Wheel

I bought the Prototipo to replace the stock Carrera type wheel on my 74 911T. I bought the Momo Adapter MO-0230 as the car is a 6/73 build. The adapter fits the spline but doesn't slide in far enough to lay flush with the rest of the column and to work the turn signal controls. It hits the lock washer as the Momo spline juts out from the bottom of the adapter instead of laying flush like the stock unit.

Anyone else do this type of swap and find trouble?
