2.7 alloy air box what years did they come?

is this a strange question?

this said air box is on a 76 2.7 engine. i don not have pics but will try and get some. it looks like the plastic air box but is alloy, not a welded together one. it looks to ba a sand cast mold and the pop off valve is round alloy as well about 3" round with small vents or openings on the side with a solid cap or top.

did anyone ever offer an aftermarket alloy box that is a direct replacement of the plastic or did Porsche ever make one of there own?

just wondering

cheers ed

There were a few different ones for 3.0s, I have 3 different types myself. A stainless one, an alloy one and one like you describe. I can try & get some pictures if you like. Factory never did it.

it looks very nice and seems to be a fairly close factory duplicate. as its the whole air box top and bottom with al stock CIS parts installed. even the upper part is alloy . i thought most after market ones i had seen still ran the plastic upper portion.

see i learn something new everyday

Might be kind of cool if anyone can source one.

Of course for the price of one, I'm willing to bet a $40 pop-off-valve will address the same potential issues, not to mention keeping your induction air cooler.

I have one out of the car that I can take a pic of or give you further information, should you need it. Not interested in selling, though, as of now.

I have the die cast alloy one on my 78SC. It was installed in 1983 by a mechanic who's father had designed and built the tooling for the part. The tooling was sitting out back of his shop and I could have bought it then but at that time I had no use for it. I don't know what happened to the tooling but it would be nice to find it now. To reproduce that tooling today would probably cost $50,000 .It was a carousel type of arrangment with 3 different sets of dies to produce 3 parts at a time.
