A day well spent on the old 911

You know how you see mods on someone else's car and you want to add them to yours? I hit the mod jackpot today. Not only did I get the mods I wanted, but the guy who owns the car with the mods did 'em for me...I helped a little.

Whenever I see Chris Nielsen's '67 and comment about how cool something is, he says, "We could do that to your car". Today we did four of those cool somethings: welded in the roll bar mounts, added a weld in strut brace, a removable harness guide on a TRE roll bar, and a cool R-ish muffler.

We started out with the roll bar mounts

Strut brace brackets

Strut brace cross bar

Roll bar harness guide brackets (I cut these out)

Break time

The doctor hard at work...note work bench

Time for a trip to the hardware store in Chris' Unimog

To be continued...

I feels good to get neat things completed on your car. You're lucky to have a '66 too, not to mention the luck of also having a Unimog.

Yeah, the Unimog is Chris'.

Back to the projects...

Tacking the brackets and harness guide together.

Harness guide brackets fitted to roll bar.

Everything fitted together #1 (we found that things fit perfectly, get welded, and don't fit. Chris had to section the cross bar to get the roll bar mounting bolts to line up)

Sectioned bar getting tack welded

Harness guide installed

Contemplating drilling the first hole and passing the point of no return

Point of no return and muffler stuffing

Hole #2

Chris welding up the muffler

New muffler which sounds awesome. It's not too loud and has a nice low rumble.

Now I get to take everything apart to paint. It's hard to believe we did all this in less than a day. One of us worked our butt off and the other documented the process for posterity.

Thanks Chris!!!

Rich...

You and Chris look to be having way too much fun.. between His last build, his dad's car, and your garage build.. now this. I about to get jealous!

Nice work for a weekend!

Looking good Rich! Glad to help...Looking back on it, we did get quite a bit accomplished!

How does the muffler sound at higher RPMs?

BTW, important to note that the harness bar was sleeved under the sectioned portions and not relying simply on the the weld.

Also we forgot to make you a dead pedal...

The muffler screams at high rpm's, but without the raspiness of my sport muffler. It sounds good...which is good, because that was a long 100 mile drive home.

I thought about the dead pedal as soon as I hit the freeway...dam.

Great tip on how to perfectly line up your muffler tips. Always something that catches my eye when it is not done properly. Looks great!

What size exhaust outlet tubes did you use?

OK. . . the roll bar brackets are hidden by the carpet so can be covered over. . . the muffler probably isn't an original date-coded Leistritz so no big deal there. . . but the strut brace mounts WELDED to the shock towers makes me cry when you could have used a WEVO camberking and gotten more negative camber up front. . . and left it original. . .

PLEASE tell me they are just tacked in place and a couple good whacks with a hammer and some SKS schutz will put things right again!

Just kidding Rich, our cars are for enjoyment and cool "Factory-like" mods are the way to go. . . enjoy and beautiful work as always.

The welds on the strut brace could be easily cut and sanded smooth. I've done it before...

I totally thought the same thing. The garage does not make the craftsman.

The carport Chris is doing the welding in? That's where he painted his '67.

I bought the brackets from TRE, Chris made the rest. It's not just a bar with holes in the end. There's inserts welded in where the bolts go through the brackets for a tight fit.

I'll post some detail shots this weekend when I take every off for painting.
