Hard decision
Fellas, I need to call on your wisdom once again. Since selling my 911 and nearly losing my soul over it, I have come across two cheapie cars to get me through the next couple of months till I am back on top:
a 1974 914 2.0 in pretty good shape for $1900 or 1966 911 that leaks and has poor paint and a rusted drivers floor for $2200. Suggestions? |

Either car could eat you alive if rusty. Sounds like the 914 is "less rusty" than the 911. 914 parts are generally also a bit more available and somewhat cheaper than pre-69 911 parts. $1900 is a very good (even great) deal for a 74 2L 914 if the FI is good and the car is solid and complete. If it's converted to carbs you might have trouble w/ the smog nazis depending on the rules where you live.

After I sold my sailboat last summer, i set out to find my first Porsche. I had $4000 from the sale and another grand in savings. I wanted a 356A or early 911. What I found in my area (MA) is alot of rust. I never considered the 914 until one caught my eye in a local trader. I took it out for a drive. it was a little rusty, but had alot to offer. That was the most fun I've had in a car since High School
. I offered the guy all I had (over $1K less than the asking) and never regretted it. I will have the car road worthy in a few months (lack of time and money prevented me from fixing the rear wheel bearing). I still want an early 911, but like my 914. Both cars are likely junk not worth getting involved with.
Since you asked, why don't you just get a used Accord or Camry, and focus on getting your business running and getting on your feet again? Seems to me a far more efficient and productive use of your time, rather than spending so much of it on deciding whether or not to buy a $2k Porshe junker. If your gonna be "back on top" in a few months, why not just wait and get a good, solid Porsche? Seems like you have so many other things that should be much higher on your priority list. Not intended as a flame, just an honest opinion, take it for what its worth, or just ignore it. |

even though it's ladden-down with all the bs emissions, the 914 seems like a better deal. $1900 for one in decent condition seems okay. i would get the 911 when you can afford the year/model you really want.

You're on the rebound, VIPRKLR... just like losing a girlfriend... will settle for the first ugly thing that comes along and pays some attention to you. We've all been thru that scenario before. Learn from it & wait at least 30 days from now & keep your eyes open and you money in your pants (pocket). I know you'll be glad you did.

Even the "Ugly" ones can be a hell of good ride!! We are talking cars here right. Anyway if the 914 is solid it may likely tide you over until you are in a position to really get the 911 you want. The parts are cheaper and more readily available. While it's not a 911 the 914 is a blast. The handling is addicting and like the "Ugly" ones it's a whole new experience.
