3.0 ltr motor upgrade
Hello all,
I'm interested in a 1976 Targa, (my first Porsche potentially) that has been updated with a 3.0 ltr motor, the seller says it's the 204 hp version, but is there any way to tell whether it's 180,200,204 or 230 HP? It's a european car. And if the tensioners have been updated, what are the tell tales? What injection system should be on a 76 2.7, and would that have been upgraded too? If it was upgraded, what is on the 3.0ltr motors? Thanks for your help and guidance. Russ |

The motor has a engine # and a serial #...they are on the block near the oil sender unit on the right side of the engine. A euro 204hp engine will have the # 930/10 stamped on it.
As to the tensioners, find a good mechanic and pay him a fee to do a pre-purcahse inspection. He will guide you over the areas to look for. Good luck. |

The upgraded tensioners have a small Oil
line that feeds them through the Chain covers. Across each side of the top of the chain housing is an oil line. Each oil line will have a 't' fitting that will branch off and feed the Hydrualic Tensioner. Take the Car to a Good Porsche Mechanic in your area and get a prepurcahse inspection. This is the best money you will ever spend !! Some 3.0 are know to break lower head studs a good prepurcahse will find this and other problems that may exist. If the owner says no to the Pre-purchase inspection just walkaway....... |

All US 2.7L engines had a Bosch Continuous Injection System (CIS) in 1976. I think that it is referred to as a K-Jetronic. As the name indicates (continuous), the fuel is added all the time. The newer fuel injection systems actually pulse the fuel into the combustion chamber. I do not think that the pulsed systems (DME) was added until the 3.2L engine was brought out. I am fairly certain that most 3.0L engines have a (CIS) system. It should be very easy to find out if it is a CIS or DME system. The CIS system has a big black rubber boot on the top right side of the engine. The other way to tell is at the fuel injectors. If you follow the fuel delivery lines from the fuel distributor (top right of the engine) to the fuel injectors, on a CIS system there will be no wires running to the injectors. On the DME system there are wires running to the fuel injectors. The wires are utilized to actuate a valve that is housed within the injector head. I do not know if there is any difference between the 2.7L CIS and the 3.0L CIS.
The way to tell if the tensioner upgrade has been made is to check the CAM cover housings. The CAM covers are located on the back right and left side of the engine. When the trunk cover is open, you should see a small oil feed line on each side running to a threaded boss that penetrates the CAM cover. I think that Pelican has a article on installing pressure fed tensioners. It will probably have pictures of the installation. Good Luck |
