Rebuild Questions Part 2
Hey guys. I've got the 3.0 almost completely disassembled. Never knew you could fit that many parts into such as small space. I have a couple general questions I know many of you can help with or at least have opinions on:
My other engine re-build experience tells me that one doesn't re-use wrist pins or rod end bushings. What's your thoughts? Does anyone have an oil cooler test specification or procedure? How do you inspect the oil pump other than visual inspection of the pump gears? And how in the world do you get the intermediate shaft gear off of the shaft once the circlips are removed? Heat? You need to invest in some reference materials
I would highly recommend the following 1)911 porsche shop manual expensive but worth it 2) up-fixin der Porsche vol III thru VIII 3)Bruce Andersons book Porsche 911 High Perfoemance Handbook 4)Porsche tech specicifications handbook 5)911 Parts and Technical Referance catalog (has all part numbers and explosion diagrams for putting all the little subassembles back together) 6)Excellance was Expected Nice resource Any of these are more than likely avil for Pelican parts. You are almost exactly in the same situation I am right now. I've got my '79 SC 3.0 completely dissassembled, cleaned and boxed up.
I've went ahead and bought a new set of connecting rod bushings and will probably buy a set of pistons which should come with wrist pins. I also bought new rocker arm shafts and am trying to find a place that sells the rocker arm bushings as well. Good luck and please keep us posted. ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

I'll try to keep you up to date. I've taken 50 or so digital photos so far to help my old mind remember just how everthing was when I go to put it back together. I should probably post a couple of them as there were a couple of things that appeared disturbing to me. I don't think I'll have to replace pistons as the measure up just fine and there appears to be no damage. I was planning on a whole new set of bearings throughout as well as having the cams done to the 964 specs. I will also have the rocker arm profiles re-done. I have talked to a guy at Motor Meister and he has recommended a couple other performance enhancements which I might do. I'm waiting right now on some tools to take the Inlet and exhaust valves apart and other than the intermediate shaft disassembly it will be all apart. I was just curious as to whether or not it was customary to replace wrist pins or use the old ones. I'd hate to rebuild this motor to only find out later that I made a morbid mistake. ------------------ 78 911SC |

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to tell you about the wrist pins. Ask the guys at Motormiester what they think.
I took my heads up to my mechanics shop and he let me use his tools to remove my valves. He had the factory spring compresser but says it dosen't work worth a crap and he usually uses a standard Auto Zone variety spring compresser. I was not planning on totally dissassembling the intermediate shaft. I would think that that would require acurate doses of heat and maybe even a press of some sort. Definately buy a rebuild kit as a minimum and you should be thinking about upgrading your head studs as well. What about a tensioner upgrade? I have already bought new valves, springs, bushings, etc. But I have a motor with 220,000 miles on it. I'd love to see some pictures of your rebuild too. You and I are in the same boat. We will probably end up giving moral support to each other as well! I am at a point right now of just waiting to save the money for machine work, head studs, and come up with something to do about my Pistons and cylinders. Leyland thanks for the tips the valves are removed. Another interesting situation though. The #2 inlet valve did not have a lower spring cup. The shim underneath where the cup should have been was rubbed out pretty good. I don't think the valve height could have been correct. I'll check it again when I put it all together. I spoke to the one other PO last night, fially tracked hiim down. He put 215K on the car and I have confirmed the motor was never rebuilt. I assume he had a (Bad)valve job somewhere along the way. Surely the Porsche folks couldn't have done this.
Where do you file a warranty claim anyway, this car should have made 300K easy? ![]() ------------------ 78 911SC |
