Drain Oil for Chain Boxes
OK...possibly stupid question but here goes. I plan to try and snug up the two nuts inside the driver's side chain box to address a naggin leak that is bugging me after my recent rebuild. Do I need to drain the crankcase oil or is it below the level of the botton of the chain box?
TIA

I think you do. Would raising the rear force the oil to the front of the engine?
Let me know if snugging up the bolts cures the leak. I have the same thing on the right side after a fresh rebuild. Even though it only drips a drop or two after running, it still annoys me.

Still though, it's nice to see Warren is still helping us out here! Fortunely this forum has become a repository for his staggering wealth of knowledge, along with others like John Walker, Grady, and countless other Porsche guru's who still keep the rest of us from screwing things up too badly.

Tighten the 2 on the bottom, you dont have to remove anything to do that..see if it helps.
If you decide to open the chain box, remove everything in the rear to get to the cover..muffller, sheetmetal, then jack up the left side and start the car for a minute to scavange the oil out and you should be good to open it. Dont leave it open over night or you ll have oil on the floor |
