fluctuating idle

my 79 3.0 has a fluctuating idle problem. it idles at 1200 when cold the when the oil temp reaches 160 it starts to fluctuate between 800 and 1200 for about 7 to 10 minutes then it jumps up to and stays at 2000
while the engine idle is up and down so is the needle for the oil temp gauge.
Any advice would be greatly apreciated.
Thank You in advance

Welcome to the world of CIS. Seriously, my 78 has an idle that hunts too. There are several threads on this subject but none have been dispositive as to a remedy. Obviously it could be a number of things. Give the past threads a look and compare past attempts at repair. That may narrow it down. As soon as you find out, let me know. I'll do the same.

My 74 2.7l CIS iddle hunts and sometimes stalls for the first 10 minutes when engine is cold. After that works fine.
I would like some help too.

I would suggest that you check your base mixture setting. I once set mine extremely rich to see what would happen -- a little more umph, but exactly your symptoms.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be related to my auxilary air valve regulator . It is a flat cylyndrical object with two valves sticking out --- you will find it to the right of the air cleaner towards the back of the engine compartment. There are two vacuum hoses attached to the regulator, you can experiment with the removal , individualy and together, of the hoses, to see if that affects the high idle. According to a friend of mine it is not uncommon for these to be disconnected. The valve is easy to replace if that is the culprit. Good Luck.
Also check the pelican tech drawings to see what the valve looks like.
