Hi folks,
The PO of the car was an active Time Trialer, and therefore had steel lug nuts for the Fuchs. A wrench told me I ought to switch back to alloy lugs as soon as possible, because the steel ones will "bite" too deeply into the alloy. True? Has anyone damaged their alloy wheels by using steel lugs? thanks ------------------ '71 911E with Webers Golden Gate Region PCA http://www.geocities.com/edrecinto/ |

I've never heard that before. Actually, you are required to use steel lug nuts in PCA and POC race classes (for 911's).
Perhaps if you don't get lug nuts that are properly rounded (convex) to seat into the concave area in the wheel around the stud holes, you'd really trash the wheels! ------------------ Chris C. 73 914 2.0 70 911E Targa campbell.chris@gte.net |

If you try removing the alloy ones from a hot lug, you're liable to have an expensive problem on your hands. I don't think the alloy ones are used by most people who are serious about racing. The Porsche steel ones have a rounded surface that faces the alloy.

![]() No problems here. I use 'em and I actually prefer them to the alloy ones. They seem to go on and off much smoother. I actually put a little smidge of cooper anti-sieze too. I'm not sure if this is correct though because I've heard that there can be some issues with metallic reactions. I guess I live on the edge. |

Some of you guys are just plain PARANOID! Name another company anywhere in the world that uses aluminum lug nuts currently, much less, that has been using them for 36 years? GM, Ford, Chrysler, Ferrari, Alfa, Fiat, Lotus, VW, MB, Nissan, Toyota, and others have been using steel lug nuts or bolts since the introduction of aluminum wheels! Has there ever been any adverse publicity or a famous liability case? I think NOT!
Find something else to worry or fixate about! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Hello
Anti Size compound is Optimol HT. Steel lugs are not recommended for winter use on the early tube type Fuchs and the Mahle magnesiums. ( Corroision ) As long in proper tourqe specs there will not be any problem. The reason for the aluminium lug nuts where the lower stress generatet trough the heat expansion and to save some unsprung wight. The lug nut´s have M 14 x 1,5 "Kalottenform D". Those are very oversized dimensions. VW used the same lug nuts on ther VW Type 2 Buses. But that tradition startet in the 356 and Porsche was not Colin Chapman. Lug nuts are dirt cheap compared to some other manufactorers. Just ask for XJ-S HE lug nuts. Grüsse |
