It begins again.. Project 964, part 1
Well after a year or so without a p-car it was time to get another project. I couldnt decide between a 993 and a 964 but since I already had 2 993's, I decided to go with a 964. The initial goal was to either find a 965, or get a 964 and make it into a 965 clone. Well, 965 rollers are a little hard to come by, so i went with a 964 roller that had right front damage. This was a complete car, minus eng, trans and seats and a few body pieces that i figured i wouldn't use because of the widebody intentions. While I was doing the bodywork I was on the hunt for 965 parts, like eng, trans, bumpers, wheels, etc. and two things happened. Someone posted a thread about 964 cup cars with a ton of pics and I really like the way the narrow body cars looked, but more importantly, I quickly realized that the 965 route would literally cost ALOT more $$$ to do it right. And every 911 Ive had, with the exception of the 993s, has been a widebody and I simply don't have the extra funds at the moment, so it will be just a nice 964, with some Cup car features! i can always flair it out later if the need arises.
Anyway, here are some pics of the initial disassembly: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245639584.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245639595.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245639605.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245639613.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245639684.jpg |

It's not the welder that will set you back- it's going out and finding the most expensive helmet that really hurts!!

Monkey - Oh, Ive been there and done that a just a few times :D
JackB, It wont be white for long.. Yes, it was bent..but not really that bad. If you look at the passenger side inner frame rail you can see a kink in it underneath the washer bottle bracket. After I got it apart, up on the frame rack it went... Here is where some issues arose.. I have the factory service manuals, and I have the frame rack specs and they were both different, so I figure, use the factory stuff right? Well, just to be sure, I posted a thread asking for other owners to get a measurement on their cars, and after about 5-6 of those, and 4-5 of my own on various other cars locally, I came to the conclusion that they were both wrong??? Were not talking about much here, but the main difference was the the measurement between the shock tower bolts. Both of the specs were about 20mm apart and all the cars I got were all 10mm short of the longest spec, or basically 10mm long of the shorter spec, or right in the middle of the two specs from the manuals. Hmmm, what to do now?? Well I ended up going right in the middle, or exactly where the 10 or so cars I measured off the street were. So the pulling began... A few tugs here and there and it was done. For the corner piece, I got a piece off of another car and patched it in, then installed a new fender, hood, bumper rebar, etc, and gave it a final tug to square everything up side to side and its done!!! Here are some more pics... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245727566.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245727581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245727596.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245727612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245727629.jpg |
If this car is back on the road before mine, I'm never going to speak to you again.

JMO, but leave it white, that car would be a great candidate for an RS or Cup recreation |
I am really looking forward to following this. Usually it is 3.2 Carreras or earlier in these sorts of threads.
Looking at the partially-disassembled car really brings home to me just how "new" these cars were compared to the Carreras. Everything under the skin looks vastly different. |
They doo look good in white....What color are you thinking?
|
Subd.

Thanks for saving this 964...Curious if that impact set off the airbags?
|
yes it did... I'm going back with a passenger bag, but i have a Momo steering wheel, so no bag on my side..
|
Nice project! Cup Cars are a fun "spec."

hhmmmm, i was leaning towards the new GT3 orange...

with this much work going into the car, why not throw out those ugly bumpers and put on some FG 959 ones?
Gary Emory has a nice set a' hangin' in his barn... |

ok, i had pretty much decided on Orange until all you White lovers chimed in. My wheels are black Cup 1s and I do have the black carerra script, so it would almost exactly like the one in the picture below.. So, which is it going to be? Opinions?? I worry that Orange wouldn't resell as easy, but flashy colors do seem to sell better at times..

That Orange does look good....Just to throw it out there have you seen the Strawberry hot rod that TRE is building for a customer....very nice.
I am not a fan of the retro colors on the more modern looking cars generally but that orange looks good....it is strong with the black accents and will only appeal to a certain segment. I saw a grey/blue 67 on here the other day that was amazing..that is kind of a crossover color....Still the white with the cup car theme is very nice...sorry just rambling. |
Go white....it's a perfect background....then change the scripts to match the season or the girlfriend's nails....

Well, color is a very subjective thing. I really like Signal and Continental Orange, but if you are going for the Cup car look, GP White is hard to beat. Especially since that is your car's original color. As you know, a color change often adversely affects resale value.
If it was a 'non-racy' color now, I'd probably go for one of the oranges. They do look good. Here's my ex-964 RSA in GP White. Shoulda kept this one! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1246890373.jpg |
well, i have at least another week or so to decide... so heres some more progress:
