S.I.R. Closing?

I heard that Seattle International Raceway will sell. Part of the Puget Sound Land Rush. This sounds like a bummer to be because it is a more challenging track than Portland I.R. Am I gonna hafta go all the way down to the flat, PIR to do Drivers Ed? Ah well, Randy and I can caravan.

Hey Superdude! I sure hope your wrong, SIR driver ed was one of my plans for the summer. I fell in love with SIR back in 1969 watching the Dan Gurney 250 Indy Car race. I also belong to the R Gruppe and we were hoping to have a Gruppe event at the historic car races.

Well if all else fails we can caravan to PIR and as you say go flat trackin'.

Well, I haven't tried SIR yet, or any other track, but I'm led to believe that SIR is a much more exciting track than Portland, so it'd be a shame to loose it. But then, that's how we make important decisions in this country regarding the allocation of resources: MONEY.

I raced there every Wednesday: on a bicycle!!! Used to be a pretty fierce ride too, especially counter-clock when the lower Esses were opened up.

Superman,
I live in Vancouver, BC and have gone to SIR since the late 60's. I even raced m/c's there until the 80's. I can't (don't) want to hear this news about the track closing. Where did you get this information? I hope it's just a rumour. I thought Bruce McCaw owned SIR and refused to sell it as he is a racer.
PIR is ok, but is not nearly as pretty as SIR. If SIR is going, we better meet in a Kent tavern and have a good cry over a few beers.

Regards,
Doug

We are losing our "Mile High" dragstrip here in Denver. The owners sold to a mall outfit due to all the complaints of people that moved next to a 25 year old racetrack. Because they were dumb, and the squeeky wheel gets the greese, we lose our only close race venue...

I heard the news/rumor from a guy with a nice, track-ready SC whos does not race much lately but has friends still very active as instructors. I should get their names again from him and call them. He's encouraged me to call them in the past.

Though I have only been out to SIR for the drags, I have heard that this track is very exciting, challenging and beautiful. Portland IR is flat, I'm told. I hope these rumors are not true. I MUST drive that track!

We lost Bridgehampton on Eastern Long Island to a golf course. Oh the humanity. I can't get over the depression.

In my post, I should have mentioned at this years Seattle motorcycle show, the club that organizes m/c racing at SIR had it's usual display...with a 2001 racing calendar displayed. I hope they aren't in for a nasty surprise!

This sounds a lot like what's happening with smaller, class-E airport (read: general aviation) that are slowly losing ground to suburban sprawl.

You'll get a development right next to an 80-year-old airport, that has minimal traffic. The first resident soccer mom that hears a Cessna take off near her house has a caniption fit.

5 years later, goodbye airport.

Screw that. There should be laws.

Well, I guess that's a common story. Folks move next to an airport of race track, and then complain about the noise. I don't get it.
