just saw the 2001 turbo on the road...

i must say, this thing looks better in real life than it does on tv or in pictures. i was tooling along in the left lane and he raced up along side me and we exchanged waves. you could tell he had just gotten this thing and hadn't quite gotten past the euphoria from its acceleration, cause afterwards in traffic he kept punching it and then backing off... punching it and backing off.

okay, maybe i'm just crazy, but it seemed as if my car drew more attention than his...

:-0

i still think these older body styles have more of an aggressive and attractive look... just my opinion.

Well, let me know if you come across one to trade; I'll gladly hand off my '86 911 for a 2001 Turbo. Hell, I'll even buy you lunch afterwards.

I was fortunate enough to have a go in one of these with 900 miles on the clock!
To her up to 120 with no effort but was worried to go much more as was not sure if it was run in yet!!!?
But owner came back a few weeks later and said I could borrow it any time!!!!
Mybe I'm mad but I declined!.
All i would need would be for some snotty kid in a golf cart to side swipe me and I would be paying for it forever!.
( I live/work in a private club where rich teenagers drive custom porsche/dodge viper golf carts!)
I do still prefer the looks of my 86!

I have to agree with 86. Last fall I was side by side with a new turbo and it looked kind of plain next to my 89 with the top down. I am sure it's a much more refined car but without the "who's your daddy" flares and tail it still lacks personality like the whole 996 line.

last summer we were at the race track and we saw a silver 2001 turbo. EVERYONE was like "WOW". people were getting their pictures taken next to it, etc.

we talked with one of our friends and he said that he had a lot of fun driving in his "turbo" on the track. mind you, this is a guy with a dozen exotic cars so we didn't know WHICH "turbo" he was talking about.

3 weeks later... we see the same silver 2001 turbo at a PCA get-together. sure enough it was our friend in the new "turbo". they look very "sleeper" in person. not as much pizazz as the old ones i admit. they have a funny habit of leaving cars with lots of "pizazz" in the dust however . he said the car has so much torque that you can drive around town in 3rd and 4th gear and then pull off to redline like it was a regular turbo in 1st.

i have the very limited perspective of having driven a couple of my father's 930's... i remember the rush of those alleged 5.0sec 0-60 times (2nd gear was amazing), but i can't imagine what it would feel like in the 4's with one of these new 2001 buggers!!!

Read the new Excellence on Turbos of today and past and you will see that the new Turbo is undeniably the best to date. Its a good article that brings to light the hard facts that despite our love for older cars, you can't argue that technology marches on. Anyone want a mint 89 911 that I can use as a downpayment for a 2001 Turbo? I'd like to keep the financing as close to $100,000 as possible.

Some reports have them in the 3s. 3.8 or something. Clearly, this car is an absolute bully. Magnificent handling, I hear. Too good, some say.

Was flipping through a fashion magazine today and noticed a tiny silver old Porsche in an ad. From the 50s I'd guess. REAL short windshield. Very smooth lines. Maybe this was the James Dean car. Anyway, my rambling point is that the lines that have always made a car beautiful have been breeded right out of todays cars. The 911 196- to 1989, and probably beyond, has those beautiful lines, in abundance They have FENDERS. And HEADLIGHTS. 911s are much more beautiful than 996s. History will agree.

If you guys drool over the Turbo, then you should check out the new GT3 : it's a Turbo with more power, less weight and rear-wheel drive only! Wheeeeew! Tailslides? yes sir, every corner you can!
Btw: yesterday a Turbo got thrashed on the way to Weissach. Icy bends and too much speed don't go together very well. Guess somebody will have to step on to Mr.Marchart's carpet today.

IMHO, the new Turbos are very lackluster looking! Absolutely fabulous cars, but bland. I just saw one on the street the other day and it was in no way a "head-turner" - didn't really notice it at first. I have a new one on order, scheduled for production in March/April, but all of the salesmen at the dealership have convinced me to sell it when it arrives and keep my black '88 930S slantnose. Long live flares and tails!!

Hi Ed,
the question is: do you want to drive or do you just want to look good?
The looks of the new Turbo might be "controversial" (Pinky Lai, the designer of the Turbo is a friend of mine, so I can't say anything negative regards the styling wink..wink..), but when it comes to driving it, then the 930 is hopelessly outclassed. You make the choice.
Main thing is that you stay true to Porsche!

Personally, after having my faith in the inherent evil of mankind vindicated by the Boxster and 996 styling, I find the new Turbo to be a lot easier to tolerate. Of course the 400+ HP helps a little.

Hi Mark,
The job is called Studio Engineer, the location is Weissach. We (2 stylists and me) are responsible for the exterior design of the new 997 & 987 (911 / Boxster) model line. So now you know who to blame in future.

Hi Stef

What I meant to say was.

I think you can spot the trend on this board. Wings and flares are still in fashion. I remember not long ago there was a "real Jeeps have round headlights" thing here in the states. The square headlight jeeps only lasted a few years. I think many on this board would agree that real porsches should have round headlights. just my 1/2 cent.

Round headlights and flares are a thing of the past. Stef, and Stef's bosses, and Stef's competitors, all know what car shape is most slippery in a wind tunnel. Cars are shaped like spear heads now. And no one is going to buck that wisdom.

Except for the wildly popular, retro styled, Chrysler PT Cruiser.

C'mon the 996 turbo is way cool. Admittedly all the other 996s look like boxsters and vice versa but the Turbo is phat. Those side air intakes and the spoiler - pretty smart.
