Stripped threads on transmission mount
I have a potential problem with my 70-911E which occurred when I dropped my engine. The mount for the right side transmission support bolt is partially stripped. The bolt, is an M12 x 1.5 and appears OK. It was tough to take out and there was metal in the bolt threads. I used a tap and die to clean up threads in the mount and on the bolt. Before I put it back together I put the bolt in to determine how much thread was holding, about 8-9 mm. When I put it back together it bolted up tight and holds OK. So far so good.
Now I want to replace the complete transmission support bar because the mounts are non replaceable. I have found a replacement in good condition. My fear is that when I remove the bolt again that it may further damage the threads and not hold when replaced. If I strip out the mount what are the options, please tell me a helicoil will do the job. Right now I’m not doing anything until I know how to handle this situation should it arise. |

Allan,
The same question came up last September in this thread: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/003114.html ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Warren, thankyou very much. At least I'm not breaking new ground here. Allan.

I recall that thread. Sounds like one of the very most difficult kinds of repairs. The reason I recall it is because my passenger side tranny bolt felt funny when it went in.
