What else will fall off when I remove.......
86 911 coupe
Transmission is back in my hands. New synchros in 1 through 4 and it now goes in 4th gear. I am cleaning up in preparation for new clutch and reassembly. How much spark plug wire do I need to replace all? How and where do I find new threaded ends to crimp on the new wires to fit the BERU connectors? I have never seen them for sale. I am going to remove the sheet metal on the sides and front side of the motor. It is ugly with some rust spots and I want to paint before putting back together. What else will fall off when I take this off? Two sensors aimed at the flywheel. Tach and speedo?? Is the wire coming out of the sheet metal immediately beneath two sensors the head temp sensor?? All of the black insulation on these wires is cracked and hard. Ideas for renewing the covering?. Heat shrink doesn't seem thick enough. Very slight amount of fresh oil around bottom fan pulley. The bottom of the belt housing was full of old dirt, residue, paper and old belt parts and compacted with old oil. Is a new seal called for? Tough job? I wanted to remove the fan shroud for paint but alas, it does not come off without removing the fan. I did clean and paint the muffler today. Boy, talk about anal. David. |

David,
If you can't cut off and split the connecting screws for the Beru connector and solder them to the new wires, you might try finding some brass machine screws with the same thread. Drill a small hole in the end (wire drills -- carbide) and cut off the head and file off to fit the Beru connector, then solder to the new wire ... about 20 feet should be enough. The flywheel sensors are TDC Reference and speed sensor for the DME. The head temp sensor is threaded into the no. 3 head. The speedometer sensor is in the transaxle on the passenger side near the ring gear. If you already/still have the muffler off, just remove the mount for the engine crossmember mounting 'saddle' and replacement of rear crank and intermediate shaft seals are easy! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Thanks Wayne,
Two seals on back of motor?? See how much I know. I assume the crank seal is behind the lower pulley. Is the other behind the little plate with two screws below the pulley? Does the pulley have a woodruff key to locate the reference marks? TIA David |

If it were me, I'd take the sheet metal in to get it powder coated. It's getting really inexpensive to powder coat stuff and the 'satin' finish is really 'stock' looking, only much more durable.
Someone recently told me how to twist the cable ends so that a doubled and twisted conductor BECOMES the male screw that goes into the Beru. Made some sense but I don't recall the details. ------------------ '83 SC |
