Rear Brake Rotors
I am getting ready to replace my rear brake rotors on my '84 911 Carrera.
I notice that the "hats" (raised section of rotor covering the parking brake) on the rear rotors are not painted. My question is whether it's normal to leave the exterior of the "hats" unpainted, or to paint them with a hi-temp paint to prevent rust. If they are to be painted, any suggestions as to color and brand of paint would be appreciated. Regards, Bruce |

Bruce,
It sounds as though your replacement rotord are not OEM, because from factory photos I have seen, the hat section you refer to are painted gray. You will need to wire brush and treat the rust with a 'comversion' treatment before attempting to paint the area. I believe Sperex VHT paint in gray color would be appropriate. I have used it on calipers and rotors with good results. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Warren,
Thanks for the rapid response. The rotors I purchased are Zimmermann's which I believe were an OEM supplier to Porsche. They were in a Zimmermann box, not a Porsche Parts box. Maybe Porsche paints the hats on the rotors they sell thru their dealers, and Zimmermann does not. There is no rust on the rotors, just plain steel. I will take your advice and and get a can of VHT grey spray paint and paint them tonight. Regards, Bruce |
