Your take on this?

In the LA area for the 4th and decided to check out the CL ads just for the hell of it.

came across this: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/1251009506.html

What do the experts say about this one?

IMO:

The premium price you "might pay" for a 74 Carrera is cancelled out by the engine swap. Yes, it's probably a MUCH better car now, but it's not a collectible anymore. Seems like a pretty nice car, though, but not at that price. If you can investigate the "good" points and feel like it's together enough to warrant that price, then sure it seems like a great car.

Oh yeah and you noticed the car isn't in LA, right?

Surely some of the PNW guys know or maybe own that car.

You checked out the LA ads and saw a Seattle car? It's not a Carrera anymore with the motor change. I'd go 15 to 18 on it, looks like a nice car but it ain't all that collectible. Regardless of the reason for a salvage title, it is still worth less. And, if there are further issues, it becomes just another '74. 12K is fair for those.

OTOH, I would buy a 993 numbers matching salvage title in a minute. I might spend near retail for a TT,

Of course I noticed the car was in Seattle. But the link is to the LA Craig's List. That - and the price - piqued my curiosity. I'm not really looking for another car. I have my hands full with the funky '75. It's enough of a project for me right now.

But So Cal is home to a lot of P cars, so I was interested to see what might be out there. And what people were asking. There's also a really bastardized early 911 for about $8000 and some sweet early 912s, if anyone is looking.

Let's see, 74 with some rust issues (which are like an iceburg, only 10% is visible), a 3.2 (whoopee), a salvage title, and he wants $25K? Without the salvage maybe 15K, with it try 10K..

My personal opinion...
2 problems you stated are small problem, sunroof rust and windshield crack. The salvage was because stolen and happend long time ago, so problems might be taken care already. Still, need to be verified. Now what left are car's condition and price, which are the normal process.

The 3.2 conversion is not the end of the world, easy get one of those lower-power 2.7 engines and stick it into it.

Optimistic on price with the rot - I would want to see more of that before bidding. If it's rusting there then what about the other classic spots? I was looking at a supposed rot-free '74 911S shell in Seattle a few weeks back, the salt had really got into it in the windscreen corners.

If I was looking at spending that money, I would probably pass on this one.

The 1974 US-spec Carreras (if that's what this was), were mostly a trim option - the engines were the same as the 911S engine with CIS. Add some flares, a tail and a script - that's basically what they were. The Euro Carreras had the 2.7 MFI motor on the other hand.
