Need advice--964/993 windshield in 87 911
All--
Sorry for the double post--I meant to ask for advice and/or a pic. I just spent ~6 hours at Safelite watching them struggle to get the new windshield in--and failing. They used a new seal--they said from the Porsche dealer--but could not get the metal trim pieces to properly seat in the seal once installed in the car. I watched for the key points--they did put the seal around the glass, then the trim in the seal, then all three into the car. The trim kept popping out, especially in the right lower corner. On the upside, its a great looking piece of glass, especially compared to my 22 year old sandblasted former windshield. They put in a Pilkington/Sigla windshield with antenna and top tint. The invoice and bar code tag says "1994", so I assume its a 964 windshield. On the other hand, they're now ordering the more modern rubber seal that will not accept the metal trim. So, I'm back in a few days for another windshield swap out. Does anyone who's replaced their 87-89 windshield with more modern glass and the trim-less seal have any pictures? I don't think I'll be able to notice the difference but want to be sure. I notice more curve to the glass and I like the look. What do you think? thanks, David

I believe the 964 seal is slightly narrower (?), you may see a faint line where your old seal used to lay. If the car has been repainted with the old seal in place, you may see a paint line.

I'd have to go out and take a pic... No tonight (11:45 pm here). If nobody has a pic for you by tomorrow, I'll do it. (tried a quick google pics - no dice)
The seal is somewhat thinner, but it even has a ridge molded in that sort of looks similar to molding. It's usually something only people in-the-know notice (I did have one guy come up to me in a parking lot and ask if I had a newer windshield in my 911 once. Surprised me!) |

Thanks, Steve. Appreciate it--you're happy with the look?

the trim has to be installed before the windshield is put in

The 964 windshield requires the 964 windshield seal.
The 964 seal does not use any trim insert.

windshield
I had the same experience with my '87. Finally took it to same chain--different shop where they had experience installing 911 w/s with gaskets--have to install trim before installing window
