New Tires for 1988 911 Targa
I need new tires for my 1988 911 Targa. It has the factory 16" wheels.
Currently installed: Yokohama - but the tires are about 10 years old and showing wear. Any recommendations on tires? Thanks, Steve |

Very subjective but here are threads that will help you get an idea on what you might want.

I notice you live in Washington, I recently bought tires for my 1987 Carrera, Bridgestone
re960 a/s pole positions. Thye are as good in dry traction as any high performance summer tire I have ever used and good in the rain and light Snow. I live in Los Angeles, California but travel everywhere. These tires have no road noise, great in wet, dry, and snow. They show no signs of wear after 5,000 miles and are very predictable. I have had Michelins, Yokohamas, Goodyear, Dunlop, and Pirelli. These are indeed the best tires I have had they are rated number one by owners in the "Tire Rack" Ultra High Performance Al season tire catagory survey, and if you read their tests these tire compeet with summer high performance in the Dry, Good Luck JL

Wow, 10 years old is too old IMO. Are they cracked and brittle? Be careful driving on that old rubber...
Check out Hankook Ventus R-S2. I'm on my third set. Great grippy low cost tyre. |

I purchased my car about two months ago and it had brand new Michelin Pilots sizes
205/55/16 and 225/50/16 which i replaced with TOYO Proxes T1R sizes 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 because i went to larger wheels and i must say that the Toyos are a LOT smoother and quieter than the Michelins... Unfortunately Tire Rack doesn't carry or rate Toyo's but it is something to look into ![]() Phil

I went to www.tirerack.com and bought some BF Goodrich Eagles Z rated.
There were about 1/2 the price that my local shop could get them for me. Had them shipped direct to him and he mounted and balanced them.

Are the Falken Azenza 615 considered a street or track tire? Where can you buy them online?

What is important to you about a tire?
Cornering, noise, wet weather, price... |

Currently using Bridgestone RE0 Pole Position on a 1985 Targa. They stick like glue. Not sure about treadlife since this is the first year they've been on.

I bought the newish Dunlop Star Spec Z1. It almost dose every thing. Warms up quickly, autoZ, drift, track, and great in the wet. Still should be a 15k mile if not abused. Like a lot of performance tires, not a great idea near frezing. Total cost about $400.
The RT-615 is a great tire but dose not come it the right sized. The Stones are great tire to but are about $600. For the price and performance it is very hard to beat the Z1's for 16" 911 wheels. TireRack.com has very good Tests & Reviews that can be a good source of info. |

Street tire. But one that's been pretty popular with the autocross crowd for the past couple years. If Tire Rack doesn't sell them, you can check out Discount Tire Direct. They're run fairly similar to Tire Rack, and they'll help you find a local, competent, reasonably priced installer.

Hey, Steve
I just ordered a rear set of Dunlop Direzza Dz101 (225/50/16) ultra hi-proformance summer tires at close-out for $44.00 each production date 2006 from TIRE RACK. At that price could not pass up. Feisal |

The 615 was one of the first Street Class Race tires aimed at SCCA AutoX.
Again, if you are running 15 or 16" rims you are not going to have much luck fitting them. There is a new hot shoe on the block in the street/track class. It is the Kumho XS but I do not think it comes in sized we can use unless one has 7&9's and wants to run 225/265's. Here is a tire shoot out: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/TireTestServlet?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+XS&tirePageLocQty= |

Over the last 25 years we have used Pirelli exclusively on all of our 911's and 930's.
Our current tires are the P-Zero Nero MS. Depending on your personal needs, you may want to check these out. The rears have always lasted 25K miles, and the fronts 45K miles. Take a look at the wear index before making a selection. "Stickier" tires offer the best performance, but the fastest wear. Good luck, Gerry Last edited by 86 911 Targa; 07-06-2009 at 06:19 PM.. |
