About 1 qt. per 1,500 miles. More if driven hard, like 1 every 1,200 miles

BLEW911 07-03-2009 11:59 AM

1/2 to 1 qt. down when I change the oil @ 4000 miles.
190,000 mi on the 3.0L.:D

2002 C4S (36K miles on ODO): 1 quart per ~1K miles (but some of that is definitely leaking due to my RMS/IMS issue...)

1986 3.2 Targa (126K miles on ODO): 1 quart per ~800-1300 miles

1972 914 1.7 (145K miles on ODO): ditto

1972 911T Targa (118K miles on ODO): ????? (I would tell you if I could ever get the damn thing home from TRE)

About every 1000-1500 miles. Getting a little stinky at traffic lights (10w-30).

78 3.0 In 7 years I never add any oil @ 3000 mile oil change.

I've got one of those. But, I knew what I was buying. Can you say cheap?

None between changes. '86 3.2, 62K on the odo, Brad Penn 20-50

tgittens 07-10-2009 10:22 AM

'72 doesn't leak a drop...someone said it may not be a real Porsche  I wish it would because I think it's a bit overfilled. '69 leaks like a sieve!

Rheritage 07-10-2009 10:32 AM

My 78 Targa has 170K on it, leaks a little, no smoke at all, needs about 1qt of Mobil 1 every 600 to 800 miles.

dw1 07-10-2009 12:53 PM

I add when it needs it, but not in one quart increments. It probably works out to one quart every 2K - 3K miles, with more "topping off" required after driving in hot weather & heavy traffic.

I put in Brad Penn at the last oil change, about 1K miles ago, and it hasn't needed anymore so far.

nesslar 07-10-2009 01:22 PM

I don't know. Never a quart, but a little now and then. I'll get back to you. Right now I'm busy looking for a blow off valve for that guy's Wife.......I feel helpful today! :D

All of my Porsches are super Porsches. I've never had to add a quart of oil to any of them, ever, even after driving hundreds of thousands of miles....

;)

daber88 07-13-2009 05:39 PM

Added a qt today, 1005 since I changed the oil. Using Brad Penn, 3.2 with 112k miles, all original engine, no top end. Not too bad I dont think!

craigyirush 07-13-2009 06:15 PM

About a quart every 700-800 miles. I have 207K on the engine. Not sure whether a top-end has ever been done.

Has anyone switched to synthetic? I was reading an issue of Excellence recently (it was from'08) and it covered a talk given by a PCA technical director. He said that his 80s Carrera always burned 800 miles/quart, even when new. But after switching to Moblil 1 (I think) he stopped burning oil.

Never heard of this. Of course you can try. Only issue is that synthetics tend to leak more, even cause leaks on a well used older engine.

I just did 2,300 miles going to Parade in Colorado. There was a lot of high RPM driving in the mountains. Above 6,000 feet it feels like you are pulling a trailer. I have a 85 Carrera with 131,000 miles and I run Sweepco. I used almost two quarts. Last year on flat ground I went over 1,5000 miles per quart.

86 911 Targa 07-14-2009 06:06 AM

One quart Mobil 1 15-50 per 700 miles. 90% freeway driving in our '86 3.2 with 103K miles.

No leaks.

(10w-30)...you're kidding, right?

jtfreels 07-14-2009 08:27 AM

1 quart around 1000 miles. Mine is at 152K miles, leaks a tiny bit :) and sometimes smoke on startup.
I hate to let the level drop, so I usually add a 1/2 quart at time.

Which brings up the question, how low is too low?

I would say no lower than the bottom line on the stick, but then the thing holds a couple of well-dead Dinosaurs' worth! I keep it midway like most.
