followup tensioner ?
Well, I dove into the tensioner upgrade on Sunday afternoon. Had to saw off one bolt holding the muffler on. Everything is going pretty well. So far its been pretty easy. Now for the question. Whats the best way to get the gasket off? The cover came off easily and the gasket unfortunately is stuck pretty well to the engine side.
By the way I put the back of the car up about 6 and only a few ounces of oil came out when I took the cover off. ------------------ Gunter '82 SC Targa [This message has been edited by retnug (edited 02-05-2001).] |

Also wondering. Do I need to use some gasket adhesive ( what type recommended ?) or do they just go on dry?

I would carefully use a putty knife to clean off the old gasket. I dont think that a gasket sealer is necessary, but if you want you can use something like Permatex "The Right Stuff" or a similar product made by Wurth (dont recall the name). Its like a gasket in a hair mousse can. It seems like application could be difficult though, since the gasket is so narrow.

No gasket adhesive on this job.
I made that mistake once and regretted it. The paper should do fine as long as you do not break it. Good luck and others may differ with me. Call a Porsche wrench and he will tell you the same. Bill 72T |

No gasket sealer required. Be careful with putty knife. Don't gouge the surface.

Gunter,
I just did my tensioner upgrade, and used *no* sealant. There was none used on the old gaskets either. Probably that's why I didn't have much trouble peeling the old gaskets off. They came off in bits and pieces, but were not really stuck on hard. The Porsche Gods must have liked my technique, as the new covers are leak-free. Regards, Doug '81SC |

Just want to reinforce the no sealer advice. Also if you haven't changed the tensioners yet. align your timming marks, and if you already changed the tensioner check your cam timming. Some one did the tensioners a while ago and un be known to him he changed his cam timming.
