Question Ballpark cost of a 3.6 conversion in a 73 911

I know there are many variables but what would a good motor go for and how much to do the conversion. I am pretty handy and would do what ever I could myself.
Again, just looking for a ballpark figure.
Thanks, Rich

Check at Dr. Timmins website, I think you can get the conversion "kit" for ~$10K not including the motor.

I think if you can weld a bit and re-use some used parts you can save quite a bit. Others who no more will be more helpful.

An engine will probably cost in the neighborhood of $7-10k, and figure at least a few thousand extra to ensure that you can tie up any loose ends... thats you doing all the work. With a 3.6 you will absolutely need to add a front oil cooler, and you [U]really[U] should do a complete brake upgrade, and probably some suspension tweaks as well.

$15k w/ motor if you do the work yourself. Closer to $20k if you pay a shop. Full cooling system is about $2k. conversion parts are several $k.

+1 what smokintr6 said, it's not just the engine its the transmision, suspension, brakes, and oil cooling as well. It really just doesn't seem to end.

For example, I just had to upgrade to Carrera axles and CV flanges on mine.

Any shortcomming your 911 has, the 3.6 will shed light on it.

if you use it as a street car you really dont need to upgrade brakes and stuff unless you track it, Kevin

Depends on where and how you drive it, Kevin

Something like beefing up the transmision and axles are cheap insurance to reduce possibility premature failure in a 3.6 conversion

That's about what I was thinking - probably $16k-$17k if you do everything yourself and maybe $22k-$23k if a shop does it.

If you want a "built" 3.6L it'd go up from there (or thereabouts).

Ultimately performance is measured not in horsepower or ft-lbs of torque, but in terms of cubic dollars.
