Targa window stop installation
I have a 71 Targa and recently purchased a new set of targa front door window stops and am wondering how to take out the old ones and install the new ones
The current ones have 2 screws from the top of the vent window that are easily removed, however there are also 2 other spots that appear to be braized into the vertical rail of the window. How are these "Braized" spots removed? and Reinstalled? The new ones have a Tapered hole drilled as though you should retrofit 2 new screws (not included) Anyone change them before that can give me a good description as to how to correctly remove and reinstall ? Thanks!

You have to take the window frames out and disassemble the vertical frame from the vent window. There are some small screw holding the pieces together that are accessible once you remove the channel felt and the pry the rubber up from the vent window. You must drill out 2 small copper rivets. The new rivets require a buck in the window channel to hammer them in. I took the bare frame to my Porsche mechanic and he hammered them in. Not difficult job but time consuming. Make sure and adjust the window so it doesn't go up past the new rubber stops. I took my vents out and put new rubber in at the same time.

If the Window frame was on the car, which side of the window stop do you drill out. The Part "inside" the triangle or the side where the Window rolls up and down? Does it make a difference ?
How does the new one Install with Rivets? Can screws be used? I didnt get any rivets with my new stops.

You have to hammer a divot into the rivet with a hammer so you can drill out without drilling the frame. You need the copper rivets as there is no way to use screws. I would not attempt this without removing the disassembling the frame, as with the hammering you will probably bend it. I drilled from the head of the rivet first and then went the other way.

I dont really see a "typical" rivet, I only see 2 flat copper looking round spots. It looks the same on both sides of the frame.
Which side of the frame did you drill on? The internal part inside the triangle or external, outside the frame? Basically, it sounds like you made a punch mark and drilled.. do you remember what size.. What type of rivet did you use that ended up with a smooth "enough' finish?

The rivet has a head and a flattened side. I drilled the head side after punching a small divot to keep the drill bit from sliding off. I think I started with a 1/8th drill bit and went up one size until the rivet spun. then I took a small chisel and hammered the tip of the flattend side off. You just have to be careful not to open the hole in the frame. The rivets are copper and I ordered from our host along with the rubber tips. It is not really complicated , just tedious. Take your time and you'll be ok. The hard part is hammering the new rivet , and as I said my Porsche mechanic slid a buck into the channel and hammered the rivet flat. The rivets are copper so they are maleable but you must be careful to not nick the frame.

I had purchased some and the body shop that was supposed to install them with my new window stop / corner pieces just drilled out my old ones and put in regular pop rivets in between where these two are supposed to go.. I can only hope Karma will kick those idiots in the crotch for all the crap they pulled. Excuse the rant, Good luck on the fix.. Gregg

how did they get the rubber or felt to sit back in with the pop rivet? it would leave a bulge.

Yes it leaves a small bulge in the window track felt but the window still operates.. Here are a couple of pics to show the "Quality Work" these idiots do.. The new rivets installed by the body shop are just plain old POP rivets.. Drivers side ![]() Passenger side ![]() These are on my list of things to do...mechanical stuff comes first, then cosmetic..
