Additional Oil Cooler?

Is it possible to add an additional 'universal' oil cooler? Will it have a significant effect in reducing the oil temperature?

Thanks,
Michael

Where do you live? What do you use the car for? What year and model car is it? What do you think a universal oil cooler is? Some detail would make an answer possible.

yes, and yes(depending on the specific installation)

you can add a valance mount or another in the drivers side front wheel well. Both work each has it's idiosyncratic +/-

I live in Bangkok, Thailand (it's pretty hot here).
It's a 1989 911.
Universal oil cooler is one that is usually compatible with many cars.

Additionally... My car usually heats up until the last white line at the top of the gauge.

Yikes, that's probably too warm for your engine. There are other possibilities and solutions than a 3rd oil cooler, all of which have been discussed very frequently. Do a search on "auxiliary oil cooler" on this site, you'll find out quite a bit.

An external aux. cooler on a 911 must have adequately-sized inlet and outlets (min. -12, 3/4" or 19mm). Universal coolers are usually bypass types and typically don't carry the full volume of cooling oil that would be the case in a 911. A single, valence-mount cooler is quite effective for engines, <3.2 liters, but a matching valence is needed to house it.

Fender-mount coolers (one or both sides) are okay given enough air flow (electric fan-assist or strategic openings usually necessary).

If you are not going to modify the look of the car in front, then you have the option of installing a large cooler on the left side of the car. This should run in series with the original factory unit in the right front fender.
You will need to source the cooler, mountings, a rock screen to protect it, fittings, hoses, and clamps to plumb it to the original cooler
Since it will be in the left fender, you will need to remove the large water reservoir located there now. A small japanese car washer reservoir and pump can be obtained and installed in the front trunk so you can preserve the windshield washers.
We also recommend that you re wire the auxillary fan to a manual switch on the dash, so you can turn it on at the middle line of the guage.
Finally a aftermarket fan should be fitted to the extra cooler as well. The high humidity and temperatures in your country necessitates as much flow and capacity as possible.

I will post some pictures of a system we are installing on a client's car tomorrow to give you some ideas

I live in Las Vegas, and the mid-eighties cooler and fan in the passenger front fender well does just fine by my 3.2. FWIW.

I have an '84 Carrera I'm adding a second oil cooler to in about a week (when I can get someone to weld the brackets for me) and am doing it how TRE Cup described it.

In central Texas my single Carrera cooler with fan can't cut it in the 100+ degree weather just driving around and add my addiction to driving at the track.... yeah, I needed the upgrade.

If worse comes to worst, I'll also be installing a front mount cooler although it involves a new front bumper to accommodate it so I'm hoping the second cooler with a fan will be enough for the time being.

This "how to" might be a good place to start:

There are also write-ups like this on Pelican, but I found this one faster.
