Weird noise coming from the transmission...

Whenever I accelerate or stop accelerating, I would hear a metallic 'clank' coming from the transmission (middle part between the rear seats). I would also hear a 'howling' sound whenever I stop accelerating; however, this howling sound does not occur if I put the car in neutral and let it roll.
Anyone ever experienced this?

Pryor experience showed me that thinking the trans was bad or was going there turned out to be wheel bearings in the trailing arm had gone bad. I dropped the half shafts and there was no more noise.
Just a thought

Other likely possibilities include:

CV joint coming loose. STOP and check all the CV joint bolts.

The center of the clutch disc coming apart. This is common for the rubber-center discs but still not unheard of with spring centers.

Bad CV joint. Grab the center of the axle shaft and see if there is play in the undesirable directions or resistance to free movement axially.

With the rear tires off the ground, grab the tire top-&-bottom and fore-&-aft and see if there is play.

Check all four engine and transmission mounts and the four fasteners between the engine and transmission.

Hopefully it is simple (and cheep).

Best,
Grady
