URGENT: Assembly of external oil thermostat

My mechanic (with very limited 911 experience) is assembling the external oil thermostat.
He is not sure regarding the orientation of the internal pistons, and the diagram from PET is not very clear... Does anyone has a better diagram or pics ??

Thanks

Bentley SC Repair Manual page 170-8 shows the details.

Why would you go to a mechanic with little or no Porsche-experience?

That usually compounds the problems and is not cheaper in the long run.

The aux. thermostate is sensitive and important and expensive. People damage the threads by cross-threading the large nuts; Steel vs. Alu.

Are you installing a better oil cooler?

Gunter, unfortunately experienced 911 mechanics outside the official porsche network are hard to come by around here...
I just finished a major body rebuild that included adding a mocal oil cooler on the front left
After a test run I noticed that the new cooler remained cold, so I suspected on the thermostat assembly...
However, using the diagram from PET, we checked that everything was in the right place, so if after assembly the problem persists, it might be the regulator piston inside gone bad...

To answer your question...

It does not matter... (the travel is axial to open and close -not rotational)

I agree with Jascha.
You cannot assemble it incorrectly.

The key is that the thermostso piston is free in its bore and the temperature 'bulb' expands correctly.

The only issue with the pressure relief is that the seating surfaces are in good condition and the piston is free to move against the spring.

The greatest dificulties with this assembly are the threads and wrench slots of the cover plugs and the threads to the four pipe fittings. When clean and unscored, the internals are relatively trouble-free.

Best,
Grady

I'd like to add to Jascha & Grady's advice above, and caution on the re-installation. It is possible to install the unit backwards (have seen it done!!)

If your wrench is inexperienced, just give him a heads-up on this.
