1986 911 Targa Oil Level and Pressure
Hello All;
I am aware for the fact that instrument cluster indications is never enough, its always best to check the oil with the dipstick but I am still curious about correct level readings on the instrument cluster. First of all I want to ask about Oil Level; when engine is at operating temperature and running on idle, my oil level reading is halfway between the full and empty mark on the oil level gauge, when driving the indicator drops to empty and when idle its on the halfway mark again. Is this normal? Do I need to add oil so that oil level is on full when running on idle? Secondly Oil Pressure; whats the correct reading for this when idle and when running at normal speed? I would like to thank you all for giving your precious time on reading this post and hoping to hear your comments on the issue. Cheers. ![]() |

At speed, my oil is on Empty and at a level rest when warm, mid position. Your good there. On the pressure, mine is a little higher than yours at warm rest but not much. Do you go to the upper part of scale when at speed? If so, that should be fine. I am at 4-5 when at speed and can peg the scale as I increase in RPM when cold.

Since the engines are dry sump, the oil level is indicative of how much oil is in the reservoir tank. When you rev the engine, as in driving, the oil is in demand and comes out of the tank into circulation thus dropping the level in the tank. This is normal operation. The level gauge measure the 'top two quarts' in the system, so with the guage midway (warmed up and at idle) you should have a dipstick reading between the two dot, meaning about 1 qt down. This is typically the best level for running the car and not to have expanded, heated, oil overflow into the intake system.
The pressure gauge is relative to the rpm's, in other words, as the rev's increase the pressure increases and, depending on oil weight and temperature, you should max out between 4 and 5 bar on the gauge.

Using Mobil 1 15-50 viscosity oil, our '86 911 oil level(s)/temperatures(s) paramaters are:
1. On level ground, and at operating temperature (185F), with the oil sump filled to the max mark on the dipstick, the indicated level on the oil level gauge is at the top white mark. The difference between the upper and lower marks is two quarts, and the three o'clock position is one quart. 2. Our oil pressure(s) at operating temperatures are: a. 3.0 Druck at idle. b. 4.5 Druck at 3000 rpm's. I think your values are fine. As per the previous posts, take care to not overfill the sump as this may cause severe issues. If you have any oil temperature or A/C concerns, please check my other posts.
