Front inner bearing seal
I'll find out as soon as I pull the other side, but my ADD won't let me wait. The new seal had more rubber on one side than the other. I assumed the more rubber side went against the spindle (since it should be sealing off), and the more metal side went on the bearing side (since that's where the bearing is).
Now I'm beginning to question myself. Todd

You've got it right Todd. The more open side faces inward and the sealing lip side faces outward on the hub so it seals the grease into the hub and seals out the debris.

Can it be assembled backwards -- ith more metal side facing out (showing) and the more rubber side facing in toward the bearing? If so, what's the damage? I have an 82 Targa.
I did the brakes and bearing repack about a week ago after midnight (first time working on a Porsche since I had a couple of 914s in the 80s), and I think I put it together with the more rubber side showing, but now after doing the other side yesterday, I am doubting myself. And I am not excited about pulling it apart to check. It seems to feel and spin okay. |

The side with the part number faces the world. The "open" side with the spring around the lip faces the bearing.
