Any trick to replace old transmission mounts ?
As far as I can tell, the early 911 tranny mounts are one solid piece of rubber with a metal center pressed into the "flat bar" that supports the transaxle (for lack of a better word)...
I have a set of replacement ones from our host, 2 piece thankfully.... How do I remove the old bushings from the old mount/bar ? Is that a torch job, like the torsion bar bushings ? ![]() Thanks ! Last edited by Deschodt; 07-17-2009 at 01:43 PM.. |

The newer mounts don't work with the 901 transmission beam. Send the transaxle beam to Hayden at Wevo. He will replace the mount ends with newer style ends and Wevo's semi-solid mounts.

Humor me...I may be wrong on the specifics but, long story short, this piece comes from someone who knows this setup and it's meant to go on my 912... How could you go about removing the old ones ? They need to come off anyway, regardless...

What's the matter Greg, don't you trust me ?
take your drill and swiss cheese the rubbers till you can punch out the center bushing. Then clean out all the residue with a screwdriver, putty knife, or whatever other weapons are required. Careful don't cut yourself. Before you install those poly graphite bushings, powder coat the beam so it looks pretty. Or Rustoleum satin black paint. Then put it all back together. Be darn sure to support the transmission with a bottle jack and wood block while you change the mount over. Be very careful not to cross thread the big bolts that go up into the torque tube. Hand thread them till you are certain they are well started, and be be sure you have enough thread engagement - you may need a longer bolt when changing over from the old block-type mount. The rule of thumb is 1 to 1 1/2 diameters. The wevo mounts are neat but they are twice the price of the polygraphite. You don't need them in your 912. You will notice a little more vibration but I think this approach beats the heck out of tired, floppy rubber blocks. And it really improves shifting. I suppose a torch and a drill and a hack saw blade will get the old rubber out, but I think you are going to find that the dimensions of the newer mount bushings aren't quite right. I figured Wevo would not have gone to the trouble to develop their retrofit fix if it was as easy as scraping out the old rubber.
